Okay so I go to an International Baccalaureate school and in order to get my IB diploma I have to complete a minimum of 150 CAS hours (Creativity, Action, and Service) haha I know it sounds lame. My topic is animal welfare and I really really want to do something with rabbits. Does anyone have ideas for community service project or any experience participating anything related to rabbit rescues? Apparently it has to be something more out of the ordinary than just volunteering at a shelter, which I do (: Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! I was thinking maybe I could do something with fostering…

I thinking fostering rabbits would be great and maybe even fostering a disabled rabbit would be awesome alot of people don’t have the time to take care of a disabled rabbit. I do have a disabled rabbit and you learn so much more by taking care of them. Also maybe you could teach people about rabbits.

Are there any public outreach programs that educate people about rabbits? I think it would be fun to do something like that.

Yeaaa IB! I graduated from an IB high school too…it’s been several years, but even if I wanted to I don’t think I could forget the IAs, SLs, HLs, EE, ToK, CAS hours, etc etc. Good memories, haha – though everything is only ever better in retrospect . Do you know what you’re going to write for your EE? I remember IB was a ton of work but I’m so glad I stuck through with it.

Maybe you could work with your local shelter to organize an awareness campaign? About a year ago, I typed up/made copies of a flyer with information about bunny awareness, drove around to all the local pet stores that sold bunnies, and talked to the managers about posting them in the stores. Surprisingly, all of them agreed, and I left big fat envelopes of the flyers for them to distribute to people who were buying pet bunnies. Perhaps you could do something similar…I can message you the flyers that I made as an example if you’re interested.

Also along the lines of awareness, maybe you could just organize something at your school, and see if you could get the local elementary/middle schools to distribute awareness flyers in the springtime for parents who might be tempted with the “Easter bunny” idea.

Now that you mention it, I wish I had known about bunnies back in high school, so I could have done something awesome like this for my CAS hours, instead of endless/pointless hospital volunteering, haha.

The rabbit rescue I adopted from does an Easter Egg Hunt/Rabbit Education day around Easter. Maybe you could organize a presentation on rabbit education and see if any local elementary schools would allow you to speak to a class about it? You could coordinate with the rescue you volunteer at. Do they have any “education bunnies”?

Hey, I went to an IB school! I remember doing all of the CAS hours too.

In my day, volunteering at a shelter or vet’s office was perfectly acceptable. Seems strange that those options are no longer good enough 🙁 I would try to work with a rescue and organize fundraising activities, education, or something similar – this would use a lot more of the skills IB wants you to have, while still helping out the bunnies.

I agree with helping organize a fundraiser or an educational event. That would go so much further for the rescue/shelter than fostering. It’s extremely hard getting people to help organize and run fundraisers and educaiton events.

Oh, and just to get on my soap box about IB … I thought it was a fantastic education, but I got no credit at my university 🙁 Apparently my school thought you should get 7’s on the tests to get any credit, but as you guys probably know, getting a 7 is almost impossible, at least across all of the tests. I was so mad because my friends who went to AP schools got all sorts of credit and were able to skip almost a year of classes. I guess that’s more a problem with my school than with IB 😛
