I don’t mean saying “no” to bunnies, because they rarely listen. I mean saying “no” to people at work.

This might be hard to explain, but there was a string of paperwork that had to be approved by me at work. I’m in manufacturing and I own what gets to run on my equipment, so I have to approve. These development guys put in the paperwork with errors, the biggest being that they names they used for recipes on the equipment were done all wrong. They did it the way they did because it was easier and meant they didn’t have to actually go to the equipment and change anything – that’s just being lazy.

I told them that we have a naming convention and there’s a reason for it, so they need to fix it. The one guy got pretty snotty about it, so I just told him I’d reject their request until they fixed it. Rejecting it felt really good!  I could’ve been nicer about it and let it slide, but they really should follow the standards and I shouldn’t have to let it go. It feels good to have the power to say no to things sometimes.

Have you guys told someone “no” lately and secretly enjoyed it?

No. But sounds like those guys deserved it, since you’d be in trouble not them if it got caught. I do disagree though, saying no to bunnies is fun, cause then you get that cute little look and thump of disapproval.

Hahaha, good point on the bunnies. Hannah actually does listen to no, but Otto just keeps doing what he’s doing. I don’t even get the entertainment of a thump.

I wouldn’t necessarily get in trouble, but bad things can happen when people don’t name things properly and their wafers could get messed up. It would be their problem if something bad happened, but as the manufacturing engineers it’s kind of our job to keep development from doing whatever they want

If they wanted rubber stamp approval on everything the paycheck would go to a little rubber stamp, not you. You used your judgement, which is why management jobs are hard to quantify because some of the most important tasks done in a day is something like this – a good judgement call.

I said no to some valentine candy in the drug store today that was calling my name. Does that count?

Saying no to candy definitely counts! That candy is so persistent – not easy to say no to, for sure.

My co-workers all said I was being way too nice to even talk to them about it and I should’ve rejected it out right. Haha. We do have a lot of rules here about how things need to be done and some of them seem silly, but if you start letting them go your sector just becomes a mess. One wafer can have hundreds of chips on it and be worth tens of thousands of dollars, so I’ll follow every rule that minimizes mistakes.
