Hey everyone found this rabbit where I live roaming around my yard, zoomed in on it the first time i saw it since it didn’t want to scare it. I live in coyote, hawk, snake, etc area, so I didn’t want it to die. It would come up to me but wouldnt really let me pet it at first, but I could touch it with a few fingers before it moved a few inches away. Pretty large rabbit, black spot on it’s eye. Im 100 percent this was a pet. He/she(think its a he since it doesn’t have a fat chin/dewlap) did get attacked by something and has some damage( looks like a scratch) on his back, but no real issues from it, walking fine, eating, drinking, not touching it. Finally caught it and for the last week been trying to find its owner and no luck. Im starting to think someone dumped it as I live near mountains. So i bought a large hutch(waiting in the mail for it ill post a link below), I live in Southern CA and it doesn’t get too cold, heat is more my issue, and am trying to learn to care for it. Right now the rabbit is inside in it’s cage in an area the dogs can’t get to it. I think it’s a Rex rabbit, but im not sure, I hope someone here could tell me. I would appreciate the help on what type it is and any small tips beyond the basics. Little guy is gonna have to live in this cage sadly until I get the hutch on the November 3rd as I have 3 large dogs, Siberian husky, German Shepherd, and a Cane Corso x Rottweiler mix. I had a cat in the mix before, it would try to even feed off my Husky, so im sure i could get it to work out lol. I have a fenced area to let him out to roam so he can get some exercise a few hours a day without my dogs bugging him(even though it loves my dogs and tries running at them lol) before the hutch gets here, but i still feel bad, better then dying though. Thanks for any help

Hi there, thank you for rescuing this rabbit! You are likely right in that it was dumped, so sad. 🙁

The main concerns with Southern CA and outdoor housing are heat (as you mentioned), disease, and predators. Currently in S CA there is a deadly rabbit virus circulating called RHDV2, but thankfully there is a vaccine available for it. There is a pinned post that is visible in all sections of the forum that has more information on that. The other main disease is Myxomatosis, which is transmitted by mosquitos.

This is a house-rabbit focused forum, so most members here keep their rabbits inside, but with your dogs I can understand why outdoors might be the best option.

What part of S CA are you in (generally)? There are quite a few rabbit rescues down there that might be able to help you out with finding a vet, equipment, etc.

Since you mentioned it looks like the bun might have gotten attacked, and since he was found wandering, it would be good to get him checked out by a vet. He might also need a dose of flea and tick prevention. There is also a product called vectra3D that keeps mosquitos away as well and can be dosed by the vet (important for outdoor housing).

It’s hard to tell if the bun is a rex, but Rex’s have very short soft plush fur, like velvet. It seems unlikely to me that a Rex would be dumped, but who knows. In general, most short haired breeds have similar care. I recommend looking through the info in this section to learn about diet, housing, health issues, etc: https://binkybunny.com/house-rabbit-information/

We’re happy to answer any other questions you have, welcome to Binky Bunny and thanks again for helping this bunny. <3

Thanks for the response, ill try to get some better pictures up(not letting me for some reason, saying i can’t add to this post), shame my videos didn’t work too. Your site is kinda hard to post media lol(no offense) or i could just be really bad haha. I feel really bad for it too, thats why i wanted to do something about it, especially with it coming up to me, it felt like it was asking for help. If I can get it to get along with my dogs overtime that would be great, like I said above I had a cat try to feed off one of my dogs before so i know it is in the realm of possibility. This bunny already seems used to dogs anyway. I am near woodland hills, CA.

I have a lot of the basics (cage, softwood, pellets, greens, I do need timothy hay though, which i had to order it online as no one sells it around me) and soon large hutch.

With everything else i have bought i do not think i could honestly afford a specialty vet right now, could maybe call and explain my situation but we all know money is king sadly. But his injury seems to be healing fine and it seems to not even notice it. Gets the “zoomies” for lack of a better word occasionally as well. I assume it was just a cat or raccoon or something small along those lines, but I haven’t got a chance to fully look yet as i dont want to just start handling it, i want it to get even more used to me, so it could honestly just be dirt(lol), but it does look more like a small injury, like a 1 inch scratch without lifting the fur.

I managed to get the videos to work. You have to click on them. In the second video, you can see a black band around his other eye. What color are his eyes? I’m wondering if he is a Hotot without the “proper” markings. That might explain why some irresponsible breeder might dump him. He could be a by-product of trying to get those “perfect” eye markings.

Thank you for the reply. Glad you got it working 🙂 His eye color is blue. if someone dumped him over eye markings that would be sad.

Yes, that would be sad. It would make sense though. As JG described below, there are other markings found in the Hotot breed. They are the by-products of trying to get that signature look (all white with black around the eyes). It isn’t unusual for breeders to sell these as pets. But an irresponsible breeder may decide to get rid of them if they have too many and can’t sell them.

The site has been having issues with media uploading, it’s not just you!

I would definitely recommend getting in touch with a rescue if there’s one in your region. They maybe be able to help with medical costs and spay/neuter given the circumstances.

Oh well at least i know im not doing something wrong haha. I will likely be trying to take it to a vet this weekend or so, I hope they will at least do low cost/break even as I understand they need to make money too. But yeah this was unexpected but i couldn’t just let the him die.

Yes, I agree that he’s probably a hotot (Blanc de Hotot) pronounced “Ho-Toe”.

I’d normally be quick to say he’s likely a mixed breed with him being a stray, but that eye mark no other black markings is very indicative of Hotots. The blue eyes make it even more likely.

I looked it up earlier and there are actually Hotot born with just the one eye band. It’s known as “Boxer”. Very cool little fella you have there. As are the Halloween decorations! I’m Australian & we don’t really do Halloween here so it’s interesting to see.

Thanks for getting him out of danger. That mark or fur loss on his back… it makes he wonder if he escaped an enclosure by going under a small gap.

Thanks for the response, that last picture in the link really looks like him. Almost exactly actually other then maybe being a little smaller. It really helps since i can look up specific care tips. That mark could be him escaping, could be a smaller animal, it looks like dried blood or dirt, haven’t really wanted to handle it too much to look as it moves just fine and seems to be doing great. I still have his missing ads up all over. I will likely be taking it to a vet in the next week or so if I dont find the owner. I love doing halloween, my house almost becomes a “haunted house” haha. This is how my house looked last year, video below. This is also the playpen for now until I get the hutch and turn the side of my house(runway area) to his playpen lol

Trying to get my dogs used to it. My Husky and Cane corso mix dont care to much, my GSD wont leave it alone lol

Just correcting an error I made with “ The blue eyes make it even more likely”. I think I got waylaid by something in page I had linked. The breed standard is brown eyes, but blue can occur- especially if Vienna gene in the line. (I think!) that gene can be responsible for some interesting markings in rabbits.

There are a few threads about dog introductions from over the years. The common thread is to go very slowly, and make sure your dogs know the command “leave it”. Other things include not giving the dogs any soft toys, as these teach them to hunt rabbit-like things. It might be hard with adult dogs to fully socialize them around the bun, but it depends on the dog. Dogs with a strong prey-drive are generally a bad idea.

If you search the forum (using the magnifying glass at the top right) you will find lots of threads from members with bunnies and dogs. Here are a few:

                                Siberian Huskies and Bunnies?

How many of us have rabbits and dog(s)?

had a German Shepard who was great with her bunny, and @Hazel as a GSP who is also well trained around the buns, so they might have some tips as well.

Thanks again for the response, ill be sure to look into those threads. In my own personal opinion, I think I am pretty good at getting animals used to each other, my Husky would even let my cat try and feed off it even though it wasn’t pregnant, I was so confused when I walked in on it. But i understand a rabbit is different so i will look into it 🙂 . Took about a month to get to the point where i felt comfy leaving the cat around my dogs, and when I did I got this lol:

I forgot to post this yesterday. Got 2 bales of timothy hay for 10 bucks as I told the a manager at a place called “the red barn” my story and showed pictures yesterday. They too believe it is a hotot without both eye markings, leading them to believe it was dumped as well for not being show worthy. Really sad if true. Anyway to guess a rabbits age?

It’s hard to guess age once they are an adult. I would say he is probably a young adult though. I’m basing that off the pictures/videos.

Well dang, wish there was a way, but bassed on his energy, I would also assume a younger adult

Hi, it is wonderful that saves this rabbit. I bet the bunny is much more happy now being away for the scary outdoors! I just wanted to add that the hutch you have might be ok, but a exercise pen or c&c Ford cage would be better. C&c girds only cost around 30 dollars too… at least the ones I found. I didn’t find the size of the hutch but it is double so it might ok.

Thanks for the response, I hope he is happier then being outside. Hopefully he fully warms up to me in about a month. The hutch I got him isn’t huge but it also isn’t small by any means. It is 78.7 long x 20.5 wide x 33.5 tall in inches. Ive seen the crazy condo things, expensive but cool. Would have built my own if I had the time haha. This is his play pen, i thought it was 8×8 feet but is 10×10 feet. I added an enclosed top so I can give him more then 4 hours of play time and don’t have to watch him the entire time.

Wow! That’s giant! Although I would be careful outside. I know he used to be outside but if he doesn’t already have RHV2 then he could still get it. I don’t know how bad it is spreading where you are but I personally don’t let my bunnies outside even though the nearest case is 5 and a half hours away and isn’t even in the same state. Better safe than sorry, I go by.

Has to be outside do to my dogs, the hutch will be under an 6-8 foot siding where I BBQ. I will be converting that area and the runway area of my backyard to a “rabbit zone” lol. He comes in at nights in his cage for now until I get the hutch built.

Not many if any mosquitos or nats right now do to weather cooling down, gets into the 40’s, but I know spring time is an issue. Have no idea if the vaccine is available in my area California, but when i take it to a vet we will see.

California is the worst for RVH2 right now. The vaccine should be available there. 40 is too cold for rabbits, anything under 55, and anything over 70 for long periods of time, which would be in this case. Outside is not okay for rabbits. Domestic rabbits are very different than wild rabbits are should be housed inside only, they can be brought outside but not live outside. Before RHV2 I brought my bunny in the backyard when we were having parties (only 3 people over though our parties aren’t big and nothing scary going on). Is it possible to block off a room for the bunny?

There are a lot of vets in Southern CA that have the vaccine thankfully! Not sure if you are in the LA area, but basically all of the VCA hospitals had it last I check, so that could be a good starting point.

Hey guys, so for anyone who cares for an update, we are getting along better and better, he will even try to push his head through his play pen to get pets. He will even lick me! I was hesitant for awhile, still kind of am, since i thought he was trying to bite me since he still grunts sometimes, or moves really fast, if i move something in his cage while my hand is in there. Never been bit yet, but he moves fast and i pull my hand out fast haha. The one time I said “screw it” he just licked me, so im so confused. I looked up a rabbit behavior video on youtube and it said grunts can mean many different things, so that was no help haha. He hates being picked up though and scratches me so im still working on that. It makes it a pain to have to chase him and/or have him mess with me all to hop into his cage all on his own when he knows its time to go in LOL. He has dug so many burrows, it’s his favorite thing. Soon ill have an underground maze 😛 Because he seems to want to socialize more I am debating about adopting another rabbit(harlequin lop, not the mini kind ill post a picture below) for him to play with. I think it’s a baby from the pictures, info didn’t have much on them. I haven’t gone in to look yet to look in person. I still havent been to the vet for a checkup, but I should be going this weekend to make sure it’s a male so I don’t get baby rabbits if i do adopt haha. So if there are any links or person tips on introducing rabbits of the same sex, especially younger rabbits to adults, I would appreciate it or any personal experience. 🙂

Glad to hear you guys are doing good. Rabbits love to have friends, but they would need to be spayed/neutered.

Awww thanks for the update! That’s so sweet he’s starting to bond with you. Getting a companion for bunny bonding is great, and I think especially good for rabbits that might spend more time alone, but yes even if they are both males they will need to be neutered. Un-castrated bunnies will not get along because their hormones make them very territorial.

Here are some of the basics to keep in mind for bunny bonding and rabbit introductions:

Yeah, grunting can mean different things depending on the context. From what you’re describing, it sounds like this may be hormonal in nature. He may be seeing you as a potential “mate”.

He is very cute in the video! Thank you for the update. I don’t think getting him a friend is a bad idea. But yes, they would both need to be neutered in order for a bond to form.

That one hurt. Wish karma would have helped me on that one for saving this rabbit, but oh well life isn’t fair.

Anyway I found out he is actually a she. The vet thinks she is a Hotot x Australian mix based on it’s white body coloring, blue eyes, black eye, and it’s bigger size of 10-11 pounds(she is in the upper 10 to lower 11 pound range) My German shepherd still shows to much interest in her but my Cane corso x Rottweiler mix doesn’t have a care in the world. Ill try to get some videos of their reactions as it’s just funny. She has is an indoor/outdoor bunny, but she prefers it outdoors as when i go to catch her to take her in she runs away from me and it’s almost like trying to catch a chicken haha. She has her 10×10 outdoor playpen, she has the hutch above on the side of the house if it’s a cool night she can spend time there, and she has a small indoor cage for now which will be upgrading to a indoor playpen area. This summer she will not be happy having to be indoors most days in a smaller area where she can’t dig, but hot California summers aren’t for her haha. Otherwise this is her now:

Thanks for the response, she is doing amazing and put on weight and the scratch on her back healed to where you would never noticed it. My vet advised against it not knowing if she was already vaccinated or not(not knowing if she was dumped, escaped, etc) and told me to wait a 9 months to a year incase she was vaccinated and to come back and get her vaccinated then to try and avoid side effects if she already was. So it’s coming up on that time to do so. I wanted to get her a friend to have someone to play with and not be alone(or chasing my dogs from inside the play pen running in a square lol) but spaying a female rabbit is rather expensive by me, around 300 bucks, which likely means I wont be getting her another friend sadly. If only she was a male, so much cheaper to get them fixed haha. Hope your rabbits are doing well 🙂

Thanks for the update! Glad she is doing well! And yes definitely get her vaccinated ASAP. The advise from the vet is a bit surprising, because I find it very unlikely that a rabbit that was dumped and unspayed would have already been vaccinated.

Also, FYI, female rabbits have a very high rate of reproductive cancer (around 75% by age 3-4), so spaying is important for health reasons. So if you can save up for it and spay within the year that will help her live a longer life. Unspayed buns usually live to about 6 or 7 on average, compared to 9-12 for spayed buns.

. . . The answers provided in this discussion are for general guideline purposes only. The information is not intended to diagnose or treat your pet. Seek the advice of your veterinarian or a qualified behaviorist.

Thank you very much for the reply. I think the vet was just worried about side effects, as she isn’t outdoors full time, but i’m new to rabbits so what do I know haha. She will be getting vaccinated though in the next month or so. I know the importance of spaying/neutering(one of my dogs Sky the one who passed away recently got pyometra when she was around 5-6 sadly, lived though it but all my dogs after were spayed) the vet also advised it that’s why I was shocked at the price when told. Specialty vets, ugh lol. I called around and all were about the same with the cheapest option being around 280 and they don’t have cheaper services like dog/cat spay/neutering services that are out there that go to dog parks for example. Just wish it wasn’t so expensive. If it was 150 maybe 200 or less I wouldn’t care as much. I might call around and look at places further then 20-30 miles around me and see if i can find a cheaper option as if i have to spend extra on gas for a much cheaper price it’s worth it. Thanks again for the reply.

The bunny is looking great and appears to be still allowing you to interact but sounds like she has good dose of sassiness. Typical for a lot of rabbits!

im actually seeing more of the Rex you initially thought she might be… just in her body shape only. So, possible Rex mix? And markings due to colour genetics and Vienna gene…

Had you decided on a name now that you know her sex?

lot of resources more relevant for SoCal.

Cost of spay is off putting. Sometimes deliberately… some vets do not like to operate on rabbits and have a higher fee as a sort of deterrent. There are some organisations that do desexing all the time and it’s more affordable. So keep that in mind.

These pages list some low cost spay/neuter clinics for your state.

It was very useful because he was quite skittish about hands when I first got him. Could you try something like that for her? Use a high value treat that’s given only in the box or carrier perhaps.

Thanks for the response and kind words. Yes she is very sassy. She doesn’t mind being pet, but yeah any kind of trying to pick her up, put her on my lap, hold her, etc she is not up for it. Might be do to when she was out in the wild and the large scratch she had might be from a bird, so the feeling of being picked up might be really off putting to her.

I never really came up with a name, but a few friends came over and called her Thumper at first since it was unisex, now we kinda play around with it and call her “Thumper-ella” “Thumper-stiltskin” etc lol.

She is soft and is why I thought she was a rex at first, but the vet thinks she is a Hotot x New Zealand mix do to size, eye color and marking, but who knows, I only cared at first to look into her specific breed to learn more about rabbits, but its fine if I never really find out.

Thank you for the links, I will be sure to get on them. Ive looked in a 20-30 mile radius around me and found nothing. I might have to up my search radius, but with gas prices being so high here(almost 7 bucks a gallon ugh) it might just be worth it to do one out here if I break even on gas lol. The picture below is from a few days ago, I was amazed, it’s even higher now t 6.89. It’s crazy.

Most rabbits don’t like being held or cuddled on laps, so that’s pretty normal. Even the ones who haven’t lived in the wild are still prey animals by nature so being caught and held can be very scary for them. Most of my buns really like to be petted when I sit on the floor with them, and one will jump on the couch for snuggles. 🙂

For going inside and outside more easily, lots of people will train their buns to go into their carrier. If you feed pellets or treats in the carrier daily it usually happens pretty quickly. 🙂

. . . The answers provided in this discussion are for general guideline purposes only. I’ve spent a lot of time with mine out in her play pen but no luck other then some pets, albeit she really loves them and even has a “spot” like a dog and will lick me everytime i hit it, then when i stop the licks stop, it’s really cute.

I do feed her in her small cage which is in her play pen and is what i used to take her inside to transfer her to her larger cage or to her hutch. So i hope it will happen quickly. If not i also saw the hay box method where you put their litter box right by it so they eat and poop all at once lol. The life of luxury haha.

I know. It’s still inching upward here in Australia. 😥 Im likely to stuff up the Aus-US $ and litre to gallon conversions so I won’t bother. But its highest it’s been in 7 years, I believe.

                                                                                    Mmm, Thumperbelle?
Thumper sounds a pretty unisex name for a rabbit, to be honest.

“She doesn’t mind being pet, but yeah any kind of trying to pick her up, put her on my lap, hold her, etc she is not up for it. ”

It could be from a past attack for sure, but it’s pretty typical for most rabbits. They can learn to tolerate it in time, but few love it. They just feel more secure with feet on the ground.

Thanks for the comment. 🙂 Had to look it up haha but a gallon is 3.78 litres. But yes this is the most expensive ever. It’s insane. I know the EU, UK, Australia and the like always had high gas prices, but here in the US it’s always been rather cheap unless you lived in like Cali, New York, etc. but it was still much cheaper then it is now.

                                                                                        “Mmm, Thumperbelle?

Thumper-ella is probably the most commonly used one as it combines Thumper and Cinderella as she is a sassy rabbit, so she gets a princess name lol.

I was just hoping she would hop up on my sometime, but if it doesn’t happen it’s not the end of the world. As long as I can give her a good life, it’s all that matters

I think the chances of her being vaccinated are very low. JG gave some good resources for vets. Hopefully you can find an affordable option. Sometimes you can even ask shelters that adopt out rabbits who they use. Oftentimes, they are a vet that doesn’t charge as much money for their services and they have tons of experience.

Hoping this will also help with potty training. Not going so well right now. Have two litterboxes in the corners she likes to use the bathroom on. One pure hay the other hay with wood, encase she likes one over the other. Hope her first cage will help as she would go in there with no issues. I had to add a tarp underneath do to her peeing. Really hope adding the cage helps haha. Then i can take out one of the litterboxes and just use the other as a hay box.

It’s 28 panels, each are 12Lx15h for a total for 4 feet wide x 3 feet long and 30 inches high. Got it on amazon for 60 bucks, great deal IMO. I might buy another to make it bigger and add a enclosed room as the clips it comes with allow for that, but we will see. Made a litter box out of an old shoe box, added some hay and am keeping all her food by it. I wish the holes were large enough that I could make a hay box and put it up next to the cage and the litterbox next to it so she can eat and poop at the same time(was watching some videos on how to potty train and this seemed the easiest way) but this will do for now until I buy another kitty litterbox or hopefully she gets used to this one i made, which is kinda small. I could also remove some panels, add the box, and just staple the corners down to the box so she can’t escape. I could also just cut some of the wire and make the holes larger so she could eat out of a hay box.So many different options. I still need to add a “real” bed, i thought I had my old cat bed still, guess I don’t so I added a blanket for now(not in the video) hope she likes it. I know she wants be to outside but at 95-97 degrees this week, that isn’t happening. Here is a video of her checking everything out:

Could have been possibly trained before. :):):)She prefers the box of hay compared to the aspen wood shavings and hay mix. So I might just use hay, albeit it won’t soak up the pee as well, might add a bottom layer of wood, we will see. Have to make an actual woodbox now or go buy a litterbox since a shoe box won’t last forever do to the pee lol. Glad it didn’t take too long. Was quicker then 2 out of 3 of my dogs lol. 😛
