Hi! My bunny ADORES digging, so I’ve thought about getting him a little sandbox to play in, so he doesn’t dig on carpets and blankets. However, I’m not sure if sand is dangerous, since it could possibly damage their respiratory system. He’s also a long-haired breed, so is the sand damaging to his hair? So, should I do it? Any tips?

Hello! Great question. Sand is definitely a bad idea because it’s a health risk. They could ingest it or breath it in as you said. It could get in their eyes or ears and possibly cause an infection. The box part of the sandbox is a good idea but instead of sand, you can fill it with shreds of plain, untreated paper or a bunch of rabbit safe toys and then hide some treats or pellets. There are ideas of foraging boxes you can look up. 🙂

You can also look up ways to bunny proof areas of your carpet with plastic mats. I do caution this because I bought a plastic mat once and it smelled heavily of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The chemical smell never aired out so I never used it.

          Good luck!

Thank you! Gonna try a litterbox with shredded paper! 🙂
