Runny Poop

Sampras has diarrhea. Yay. 
He got it on Monday the 17th, vet gave me Ranitidone and told me to keep an eye on fluid intake etc. It cleared up be Tuesday, we went back on Thursday and he was placed onto a batch of new meds-meloxicam  and bisolvan. He had diarrhea again this morning.

I’ve cleaned him up and separated him and Yumi(they can interact through the bars I just sectioned it off) so I can monitor poop (Yay) and make sure she doesnt have it aswell.

I want to put it down to the fact his medication is causing tummy upset but I don’t wanna ignore it if it’s somehting more serious. 
I slipped him a ranitidone this morning to make sure his tummy keeps ticking over, and he’s currently grooming himself(he has eaten a bit, but not much- he’s never really hungry at this time anyway) 

I’ve taken the greens away(which have his probiotic on them) because I dont want to exacerbate the situation(Should I have? ) And I havent given him pellets either.

I have read mixed things, some say it actually makes the diarrhea worse, but I like the idea of it increasing fluid intake!

I have critical care if things get worse, but I think he’s okay for now, he’s still bopping around begging for treats.

I would also like to take this moment to be 100% honest and say Sampras did manage to take a bite out of a chocolate brownie I had -I left it on my bed when I went to stop Yumi chewing on my bean bag. He didnt get much of it, but then again not much in human terms, is a lot in the rabbit world. I feel awful. I know chocolate is awful for them, and sugar is even worse, and it was homemade…so I know how much chocolate and sugar was in it

I do think this is about disruption of the gut microbiota, probably because of the meds he’s getting. If there’s normal poop as well all runny poop, this isn’t true diarrhea. (True diarrhea in a bun is very serious.)
I don’t think the Beaphar tummy care would make much of a difference, honestly. In the U.K., there are bunny probiotics and rehydration-products that are much more the real thing. Protexin has a range of really good supplements and Supreme Science makes both Recovery plus and a Vetcare Plus digestive health pellet.

Thanks Bam, yeah there are a couple of regular shaped albeit very soft stools in there. He’s eating his hay and still drinking and acting annoyed with me cause I took away half of his enclosure
so Im not overly concerned yet.
He has a vet appointment tomorrow anyway.

If the probiotic you have is a powder, could you mix it with a little water and syringe feed it?

It’s hard to figure out sometimes what causes their poop to do this. Past antibiotics? Definitely. Stress from going to vet, stress from being medicated, not eating cecals because of the health issues… The the meds can do it sometimes too, especially if they contain sorbitol and a rabbit is particularly sensitive.

It’s good you’ve seen some normal poos. Hopefully more of those to come!!

I’m not really clear why the vet gave ranitidine for this?

I was wondering the same thing as Jersey, ranitidin helps the stomach empty out it’s contents into the duodenum (first part of small intestine), so the primary reason a bun gets it is to remedy a slow gut. It also reduces amount of stomach acid excreted into the stomach – which is the primary reason why humans take this med.

The normal poop + sticky/runny poop is a very good sign. With true diarrhea, there are no normal poop, just runny, watery and/or mucosy poop.

Yeah he decided to do a big pile OUTSIDE the litter tray “Look human Im fine, gimme treats now”

I was reading up on it and it does sound like he has that Bam! Which is understandable seeing how much his little system has been through (plus coming off the antibiotics I would say has let bacteria start culturing his gut finally, so Im going to syringe feed him some probiotics to make sure it’s good stuff taking root there.)

The vet was concerned by his past of snubbing food when he wasnt feeling well. She said she’d seen a lot of young rabbits come through with “minor” scour and then within hours they’d gone into GI stasis. She did point out that she knew it seemed ridiculous to give a gut motility drug to an animal that’s gut was doing a bit too much moving!
