Hi all, I have an 8 month old New Zealand rabbit and he’s usually pretty healthy, but I think he might be sick. Right below his nose he has some fur that looks like it was wet but kind of dried out and it looks kind of yellow. He had 6 cups of romaine lettuce everyday for the past 3 days and I just found out about the E. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce. Is this a symptom of a sickness from E. coli?

          E. coli primarily gives symptoms from the gut in rabbits, like diarrhea. Forum leader DanaNM just looked into this because of the e.coli romaine outbreak. I think your bunny has a “bunny cold”. It’s as a rule caused by bacteria and needs treatment with antibiotics. A decongestant can be given if the rabbits nostrils are clogged. You can wipe the nose with a moist warm cloth to remove dried “snot”.

It’s important to start treatment as soon as possible, because a bunny cold can spread to the middle ear via the ear trumpet or to the lungs, and you absolutely want to avoid that.
