         I. Am. Going. In. Sane.

today, I spent almost $500 taking Rorschach to the vet to get x rays, bloodwork, meds, etc. turns out something is wrong with his liver, and it looks like it may just be an infection because the antibiotics are helping him poop, eat, drink, etc.

Rorschach has been gnawing at the carpet NON STOP for the past few days, and I spray him with a wtaer bottle, yell, etc when he does it and he KEEPS GOING BACK TO IT. I cannot handle another vet visit, and I cannot have him continuously eating carpet!! It’s no freaking wonder he got sick.

My whole apartment is carpeted so I’m going to have to find something to  put over it. Please tell me you guys have suggestions. I’m seriously losing my mind here, he won’t stop and I’m so worried he’s going to be sick all over again.

I wonder if it’s his way of dealing with whatever is going on internally? I remember sometimes infections can send people loopy so I wonder if it effects buns the same way?

Are they in a pen for the most part? Can you cover the main area they’re in. In the hopes this passes when he’s starting to feel better?  I’m thinking something like those big bamboo mats.

I separated half of the living room with an x-pen fence.. I don’t have anything to cover the carpet with right now. The only thing I can think of is flattened cardboard boxes, their space is pretty big. I really don’t know what to do right now but I want to cry. I’m exhausted, I haven’t slept, I’ve been stressing over him since yesterday and he WON’T STOP CHEWING THE CARPET even though I’m chasing him around with a spray bottle. My boyfriend suggested I put him in his cage, but it’s so small he can’t stand up in it.

Maybe shrink their area, and set up the pen like a pen until he learns to behave?

Have you tried sheets? That’s what I used when Cady went through his carpet destruction stage

@TaraMichele what kind of sheets? like bedsheets? they have also chewed through those in the past, but it could definitely be worth a try..

I was just looking at coroplast squares.. home depot has 45 sq. feet for about $40

The cage would be ok for a short time. Might stop his persistance. Or as MB said, make a small penned area. Just do that for a day, 1/2 day, whatever and go get yourself some rest!! You might come up with something more permanent after that if it’s still needed.
Or what about a tiled laundry or bathroom? Could they safely be set up in there for the short term?

It might sound silly but he could be picking up on your stress or working out his own stress from the vet visit.  Give them something to destroy that you’ve known has been a hit in the past. Boxes, willow baskets etc

What about a sheet of linoleum?

Maybe invest in some grass mats. He may just be needing to chew something to help him deal with his illness and getting the mats would help him with it and be safe too.

I would just shrink down his area using the x-pen, just make a pen or run for him, and go to a big box store like Meijer (if you have one) and get a couple rolls of those plastic carpet protector sheets to put under his new pen. If your state does not have Meijer, then Wal-mart or Big Lots should have them too. This is essentially what Momo lives in. An x-pen with a carpet protector under it. Works for us.

I have sheet vinyl under my buns closed in play area because he is a carpet chewer. It was 23 dollars for 6×8 square of it from Home Depot. Although to be honest chloroplast will probably work better setting the sheet vinyl moves if humans walk on it. I had to secure mine with 2x4s and tape (he doesn’t bug tape). I feel your pain though. Also you can try diluted vinegar in a spot if he seems to favor one area.
