Ringworm

Has anyone here ever gotten ringworm from their bun?  We have had goose for about 10 months. About a month ago i got this great spot of ringworm on my leg. It continues to spread despite my doctors best tries.  We did OTC and then prescription anti fungal creams and then started oral antifungals.  

Goose shows no symptoms.  He has no bald spots.  He isn’t excessively itchy.  I work in pediatrics so its entirely possible I caught this elsewhere.  

So I guess has anyone ever gotten ringworm from their rabbit?  If so did the rabbit show symptoms?

All i know is that if Goose didnt give it to you , you need to stay away from him so it doesnt pass to him.

Reeem, I keep all my spots well covered! No worries there. I have been living with this for over a month and no one in our household or others i have close contact with have any issues!

I had to go back to the doctor today. They did skin scrapings and looked at it under the microscope… its ringworm. You have no idea how bad I wish it was something else. I am now on one of the strongest antifungals they make and the strongest creams. Goose is still showing no symptoms.

I’m sorry. =( Are you able to keep it covered up with a bandage or something? I’m sure Goose will be fine.

Yes I am able to keep it mostly covered with clothes and ban aids, thankfully. I am more worried that I got it from Goose not the other way around as we are unable to determine where I got it. Could be anywhere the only problem is its still spreading despite meds

You generally see a bald spot on animals when they have ringworm. Unless it was somewhere you couldn’t see it like on his belly? You can pick ringworm up from anywhere though. The fungus can linger on surfaces for quite some time after an infected person/animal comes in contact with it. So you never know, you could have come in contact with something somewhere out in public and never known.

I’d discuss the situation with your vet. Though none of my rabbits have ever had ringworm, I have had mice get ringworm, and it isn’t always that obvious or clear. The symptoms can be atypical.

About you, as medications are used year after year, they often become less effective because the microbes they are killing evolve a resistance to them. You hear about it a lot with antibiotics, but it’s been happening with other things too. Head lice have become extremely resistant to most pesticide shampoos.

Older remedies often work much better than the chemicals the microbes have become resistant to. I have an old fashioned athletes foot remedy that has always worked well and is totally harmless. I’ve never tried it on ringworm, but they are both fungal infections, so I figure it can’t hurt to give it a go. A long soak in salt and vinegar. I wouldn’t do it as a substitute for conventional treatment, but since the conventional treatment is failing, maybe give it a try along side the conventional treatment.

Eepster.. Thanks. I may try the salt and vinegar bath.. I may end up smelling like those trendy new chips…

the medications are finally prevailing over the ring worm. It is very likely a very resistant form as i probably picked it up in the hospital..
