My rabbit, Ricky, is 10.5 years old, spayed, female. She has had bouts of GI stasis several times over past couple years and after the most recent episode she began drinking, eating, urinating, and pooping excessively (draining her water bowl over night that would take two days or more to empty). Took her to vet who did urinalysis, blood test, and exam and found that kidney function is “marginal” and her urine is extremely dilute (other organs and digestive tract look great, no sign of infection or UTI). Vet diagnosed as early stage kidney failure and said that there is really nothing we can do to stop the progression of this besides continuing to give her all the water, hay, and food she could need. At home she definitely sleeps a lot more than usual but is also very active following us around the house. If I didn’t know her so well I would say someone coming in wouldn’t even know she was sick. Unfortunately, and the reason for this post, the vet really couldn’t give us a time frame for the progression of the kidney failure (how long she has left).
I guess I was wondering if anyone has gone through this process before and can shed light on what to expect. I know every rabbit is different but it would be helpful to have an idea of how long she has left or what to expect as this thing continues. Also, if anyone who has gone through this has any tips on how we can make her the most comfortable and happy. I started giving her the Oxbow urinary/renal support tablets. So far Ricky does not seem to be in any pain and seems very content still which is great but kind of misleading for such a serious diagnosis. Normally too I might try to get a second opinion just in case but our town is so small we only have one qualified rabbit/exotic veterinarian.
We are devastated by this diagnosis but just really happy that she still seems to be content and not in pain for such an old lady bun.
Thank you for any insight.
