Hi guys, my Mum is planning to paint the kitchen soon and I’m a bit worried about paint fumes with the bunnies. The rabbits live upstairs and I will of course open all windows (but I don’t want to open the window of their room because cats could possibly come in as the extension downstairs means there’s a roof right under the rabbit’s window. And we have a lot of cats around) Any tips you could give me to protect them from the fumes? I could shut the door of their room but that means they’d be limited to just their room as opposed to the hallway and my bedroom. Any ideas?

How long do you think it will take to paint? If it’s just one day, I think they would be fine staying in one room (they should be fine even if it takes longer but since they’re used to more space they might get cranky). I would just shut their door and maybe put a towel down so the fumes don’t come through underneath the door. The paint should be dry after a couple of hours and once it’s dry the smell should dissipate pretty quickly, especially with the windows open. Happy painting!

I’ve mentioned to Mum that getting it done as quickly as possible would be best so hopefully just a day or two. I’ll keep them in their room then with all other windows open. My only issue with shutting their door is it opens into the room, so I’d have to be careful when opening it that I don’t knock them!  It also gets quite warm but I can always open their window and sit in the room with them whilst it cools down.

Did she already buy the paint? If not, you could try to convince her to buy the more expensive (shhh ) “Low VOC” paint. The fumes won’t be as bad and will dissipate faster.

I don’t think she’s bought the paint yet. I’ll see what i can do  I suppose I can always cover the cost difference if necessary!
