Hey everyone,
So I noticed last week that Annabel had some red color urine. Normally, she is good about using her litter box but that time she used the shelf in her cage. I immediately freaked out naturally. I cleaned it up, checked her for any injuries, and any strange behavior. It was on a Sunday where my vet was closed so I kept an eye on her the whole day and researched.
She’s about 3 years old, spayed, French lop/Dutch mix. After that Sunday her urine went back to normal but I noticed it again today.
From what I’ve read, rabbit urine can range in color and just because it’s red doesn’t mean it’s blood. Apparently it’s plant pigment from veggies and doesn’t impact their health. Annabel has been get red leaf lettuce, wheatgrass, rare occasion half of a grape, and some dandelion leaves.
Her behavior is the same, full of life, curious, and snuggly. She drinks plenty of water, she gets about 1/4 a cup of pellets, and plenty of Timothy hay that she plows through. I’ve checked her poop, and all is normal color, size, and consistency.
I’m just wondering if I should give her some different veggies in the meantime? I’m going to be out of town for three months for an internship so my family is going to be taking care of her. I just don’t want them to freak out if this happens when I’m gone.
Have any of you had this problem? It seems to go away after a while but then comes back even without change in diet.
