Red and itchy ears WHILE being treated for an ear infection

I brought Benjamin (2ish y/o lop mix) in to the vet last Friday for a checkup and because I’d suspected he had an ear infection. He didn’t have any major symptoms typical to an ear infection (i.e. scratching his ears, incessant ear cleaning, etc.), but I figured better be safe than sorry. turns out I was right and he had the beginnings of an infection in his left ear. since then, he’s been on ear drops twice daily and is taking them like a champ. But today I noticed that his left ear is red and scratched up. I called the vet immediately, but as luck would have it, our rabbit – savvy vet is on vacation. so we left a message for the other exotic vet that works there, but we will not be hearing from her until tomorrow at the earliest. So in a panic to keep my fur baby pain an itch free, I came here! do you think it’s a reaction to the medication? maybe it’s causing an allergic reaction? should I hold off on giving it to him until the vet calls back? Like I said before, he hadn’t been scratching/ cleaning more than normal prior to the drops. Thank you so much in advance!!!

What type of infection is it? Bacteria? Yeast?
