Recovering from gi stasis

Hi all,

I posted separately about my bun’s stasis episode, but the title was about administering critical care, so I wanted to make a separate post for this question.

Oreo started eating food again yesterday finally, and also had poop after not having any.  She doesn’t seem in pain, so stopped metacam and also stopped metaclopramide since she was eating/pooping.  

Is it normal that she only has maybe half her normal appetite?  I’m assuming that eating/pooping versus not means she is doing fine and just needs time to get back to normal?  I keep offering her hay/lettuce where she’s hanging out during day and she has munched on quite a bit although like I said a lot less than normal.

In summary, is it expected for it to take time for her to regain full appetite?  I know it’s true for humans!  Oh and just additional info on her episode: stopped eating completely for 2 – 2.5 days with the exception of syringe feeding after the first day/day and a half.  Stasis not due to illness, likely ingested too much fur as she was going through a heavy shed..  Thanks!

I’m no rabbit expert, but I can tell you that with my boy, he takes about a week or so to get back to normal. As he ages it’s taking him longer and longer. For example, he had a trip to the emergency vet and it took him a month before he was eating his full meals after that.
If it were me I’d give it a full 7 days for recovery. I wouldn’t worry to much before that provided everything else seems normal.

It may take up to a month before they are themselves fully after a bout of stasis.

Thanks! I think I spoke too soon, she’s doing just fine now. I’m so happy to see her happy again. She’s so eager to receive pets and attention and before this was more distant. Usually after all the extra handling and picking up involved with being sick makes them resent you a bit but maybe she really needed the attention because she’s being so good with me now. Now I feel more guilty that perhaps she felt neglect a bit, it’s been so hard since my second was born in May. I just can’t give them the same amount of attention although I certainly give them proper care and attention. Either way she’s doing wonderfully and I appreciate your comments . I’ve been lucky that this is the only time we’ve gone through a bad bout in my two bunnies’ 6 years of life, aside from one time at five months old for Oreo. Thanks again!
