My female rabbit (june) humps my neutered male rabbit (ringo) and while she’s doing that she will tense up into a ball on top of him, make a grunting type noise, and then fall over.

June is approximately 6-7 months old and a holland lop, i know that they go through sexual maturity around 5-6months old, but whats happening to june while she humps is something i haven’t seen other rabbits do.

can anyone help explain what might be going on? if its something serious that needs to be checked out, or if its something i shouldn’t worry too much about?

You shouldn’t worry. You should get her spayed when she does get spayed her hormones will calm down and she shouldn’t do that anymore.

I haven’t seen that before… Almost sounds like “completion” of mating, but I don’t know that a female would do that. How positive are you that she’s female?

I was thinking the same thing Beka.

Kokanee used to do that-so definitely females can….Spaying will stop it I’m sure-hopefully before your male gets upset about the attention!

I am 100% sure she is female, I took her to the exotic animal vet that I take Ringo to to find out if she was male or female and she told me that she is definitely a female.

Sadly i do not have the money to get her spayed right now, I’m currently unemployed and in college and the vet that i take them too is expensive, a health checkup usually costs around $100 and neutering/spaying usually is $300-$500. but hopefully this summer I can save up the money for her. Fortunately Ringo loves june and just lets her do whatever, as long as he gets groomed after then he’s happy.

Thank you for the clarification, K&K! Like I said, I wasn’t sure if a female would display that behavior, but good to know someone else has seen this!

Ellie, that’s great that you have confirmation on her sex! Bunnies are so often “mis-sexed” so I just wanted to make sure! 🙂

I understand having tight financial constraints. Spaying her this summer should be fine. In the meantime, maybe keep researching vets to see if you can find someone who charges less, or see if your area has any low cost spay/neuter programs.

That’s good they get along now, but if they start to fight, be prepared to separate and house them separately.

Is that your boy in your picture? He is so cute! Is he a mini rex?

Ditto on the researchiing vets. You can call a few shelters that have a lot of rabbits for adoption and ask who does their spays. Often a vet is very experienced and donating their time and expertise, so might be available for a reduced rate or a pay plan over time.

Beka-haha! I totally was convinced she was a boy when I saw it-it was very …boyish behaviour?

Ditto the idea to keep researching vets! If you find someone cheaper though that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not as good as the other, or that it is as good-there are some good resources here to help you find and screen vets http://rabbit.org/faq-how-to-find-a-good-rabbit-vet/

K&K… You probably had a thread about Kokanee’s behavior all those years ago… It’s crazy to think about how long ago that was. To this day, I still consider Kokanee one of the most amazing bunnies I’ve ever “known”. She was a special girl… 🙂
