really bad eye problem

I have an all black (i mentioned color because ive had similar issues, eyes and teeth, with only my other black dwarfs) dwarf I rescued several yrs ago, I think maybe about 5 or 6 yrs old. About 2 years ago he suddenly developed malocclusion of his four front teeth, which I trim regularly and are clipped and look good right now. I check and handle every bunny daily and usually several time a day. Last Monday (7/29/13) I was putting Bambi, ill bunny, into his play pen, along with his companion and cagemate Chase, and noticed that his eyes looked infected. 

Both of Bambi’s eyes had white and clear mucosal dischange in and around the eyes and dried in the fur around the eye. The right eye was completely swollen shut and the left eye is bulging.  Both scleras were red and blood shot and the corneas are very and completely clouded over. The most disturbing symptom is he’s turning his head to the left, same side as the bulging eye, but not tilting. Hes eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally and does not appear to be dizzy because he has not problems hopping around. He seems to be able to see, at least a little, since he’s finding his way in and out of his bunny house.

I flushed out both eyes with sterile saline solution and have been using lubricating eye drops.  I’m using gentocin ophthalmic ointment twice a day, clindamycin 25 mg/ml .25ml once a day orally. Last pm I started using ketorolac tromethane ophthalmic drops, an anti-inflammatory, I think the cloudiness may be caused by inflammation and or irritation.  I’ve had rabbits with cataracts and this doesn’t look like that.

Since Monday, and several days of medicating,  his right eye is open and the cloudiness is improving. There is a definite improvement as far as the infections, decrease in discharge and redness. However, the left eye is still bulging, is very cloudy and he’s still turning his head to the left.

I have a arsenal of medications but I’m not sure exactly what I’m dealing with or which medication(having some technical problems..sorry)

 

thappropriate.  I’m unfortunately unable to bring him to the vet, my mothers ill and moneys a problem,  but I’m working on getting him there as soon as I can. I think this maybe a rebulbar abcess, given the dental issues, & I’ve had 2 other buns with similar dental abcess problems, both didn’t end well

I really have no idea how we are suppose to help you in this type of situation. This warrants a visit ASAP. Sounds like a bad abscess from his teeth or something. How long has this been going on for?

I think he needs to see a vet as well – there is no way for anyone to know what is wrong with his and definitely no way for us to recommend medication. I guess if you feel like what you are doing is helping then continue with that but really do see a vet – you don’t want to mess with a problem with his eye especially if it’s really bad and he could be in pain.

I’m gonna speak with my vet Monday and hopefully he’ll either prescribe something additional or let me do a payment plan. I tried to post a pic but it kept being rejected I was hoping someone has dealt with something similar and could give me some insight and share their course of medical treatment. He seems comfortable and is acting completely normal otherwise. The lubricating drops, inflammatory drops and antibiotic ointment seem to be helping
I read reglan, metoclopram, is suggested as well as flagyl, metronidazole, has anyone used either and at what strength and dose. Were there any side effects?
Any help would be appreciated

Reglan (metacloprimide) is used as gut motility med in rabbits. I’m not seeing how it will help. Where did you read that it could?

I will recommend NOT giving oral clindamycin. It will make him very ill. Were you prescribed this for a rabbit in the past?

I would stop giving it and get him onto a probiotic ASAP. If you don’t have any, you could try give him cecals from a healthy rabbit but there’s no guarantee he’ll eat them. Keep a close eye on changes in his poo. You may need him on a safe antibiotic incase he has ill effects from the clindamycin. Please get vet advice though if you introduce another med so you can be assured it won’t interact with others he’s getting.

Honestly, I’m sorry you’re in a difficult situation but don’t try treat this at home too long. Organizing a payment plan with the vet is an excellent idea.

BB’s rabbit has glaucoma and the picture shows how the lens in the eye has slipped. (I’m not implying your rabbit has glaucoma by the way).
