I am using raisins to train my 7 month old bun, Zeke. I just started about a week ago and he gets usually 2/day sometimes 4. Zeke is a not yet 4 pound mini rex buck.

I read raisins were a good treat food.  I just got a text from my hubby, someone was warning him that raisins have too much iron and are therefore bad for rabbits.

I cannot find any research to support that raisins are bad for rabbits….   does anyone have any wisdom for me?  He is very food motivated and will do anything for a raisin.  LOL.  If raisins are bad what dried fruit do you think would work better for training?  I like dried so I can keep in in a cup by me for instant positive reinforcement.

        Zeke’s diet:

I divide this into two daily portions as it helps me get him into his cage in morning before I leave before classes and at bedtime

1/3 cup Oxbow bunny essentials pellets

2 slices of apple (thickness of a coin/quarter)

2 packed cups of leafy greens and herbs

Unlimited Oxbow hay (I rotate Timothy, Orchard grass and Botanical)

Raisin specific nutrients aside, I think the combo of apple slices and daily raisins is too much sugar to have so frequently. If you want to continue the raisins, which are technically safe in moderation, I recommend limiting only two per day, and take out apple slices all together.

So in short, I don’t know about iron or anything, but that’s a lot of sugar.
