Rabbits have fleas

In the past couple of days, I found 1 flea on 1 of my dogs & also 1 flea & some eggs on 1 of my cats. So the dogs got flea baths, cats got flea collars, will probably also be getting flea collars & Revolution for the dogs.

I figured the bunnies had a good chance of having them too & sure enough, spotted 1 on Obi-bun’s ear!  It got away before I could kill it. I did a bit of research on the forums & will be getting a prescription of Revolution for the bunnies as soon as possible (Probably Monday unfortunately).

I read also just to do a thorough cleaning, though I do not want to use a flea powder in the room since the last time I tried using a powder for bugs, it was an absolute nightmare trying to clean it up! So, I will just be vacuuming frequently for a few weeks, using the method of a flea collar in the vacuum.

 

But I wanted to check also, if anyone knows if this spray is safe for rabbits? It says it’s all natural, but does anyone know if the ingredients listed are harmful? I would be removing them from the room while it’s being treated of course. If it is safe to use in the room, how long should I keep them out of the room?

Is anyone ableto help? Or maybe know of other carpet sprays I can use for the fleas?

You can use diatomaceous earth on carpets, and around thresholds etc where bugs can hide – it’s non-toxic, but you don’t want your pets breathing it in or eating it. It’s a very fine silicaeous dust that kills by drying out bedbugs and lice and other similar critters and it can be vacuumed off the surfaces where it’s been used after 24-48 hours.

The spray you have seem fine to me for use in a room, but I’d not use it on a bunny. I think you could weather it out after a few hours and then pop the pets back into the room. It might be harmless for use directly on the animals, but concentrated essential oils can cause skin irritation so I’d not chance it.

I don’t think the ingredients are toxic. At least not in low concentrations. But peppermint and clove oil are often sold as repellents to keep rabbits, deer, etc. out of people’s gardens. So probably not a good idea to put it on your bunnies.

Now you mention it LBJ, clove oil is used as a rabbit repellant! But peppermint is probably ok, just the other day I found a rabbit hole (a real hole that goes deep down into the underworld!) in the middle of my mint-patch

I would probably remove them from the room for a bit if I did spray it. I do have diatamaceous earth, but the last time I tried clean up for that stuff, it was a mess! The stuff went right through the vacuum filter & went all over the room again!

Thankfully I’ll be getting hard flooring soon & shouldn’t have to worry about these kinds of things as much
