Has anybunny bought the 2011 annual rabbit magazine?
I saw it at the bookstore last night and I squealed!! I was squealing over the pictures and the lady in front of me in line kept looking at me (this was according to my boyfriend, I was too busy squealing). Lol.
Anyways, I read the entire magazine last night in bed. The magazine is very very good and informative. There is wonderful information. There is also a photo contest that is hilarous
, an article on Myxomatosis, pet therapy rabbits William & Shakespeare, Good advice on “Golden years for your big ears,” (senior rabbits) AND LOTS MORE!!
Here is some information I got from the magazine that I’d like to share:
- Rabbits have sensitive taste buds – and plenty of them. Rabbit taste buds have been studied for decades, and numerous scientific publications have detailed the complicated structure, function, and typese of taste buds found on rabbit tongues.
Taste buds are especially abundant in the numerous foliate papillae, located at the sides of the base of the tongue. Each papillae looks like a tiny, cone-shaped bump or protuberane on the tongue. In the rabbit, there are approx 7,000 tase buds on each individual foliate papilla
Foliate papillae are classified into types, according to function and microscopic anatomy. Clearly not all taste buds are the same (Chacha hates carrots), and taste discrimination plays a very important role in what a rabbit likes to eat!
- If rabbits are bored, they will pull their fur out. (Fixed or unfixed)
- A poll of the question: What is your rabbits favorite toy?
33% voted me! (the slave)
25% destory toys!! (toys to chew!)
- For potty training and litter boxes, cat sized ones are recommended. For senior bunnies, one with a lower top all around is recommended.
- The original carriers of Myxomatosis are North and South American wild rabbits, but has hit domestic rabbits.
- Myxo is a virus spread mainly by blood sucking insects (mosquitos, fleas, ticks, mites)
- Myxo is directly transmitted between rabbits by aerosol route (rabbits infected by inhalation usually develop nasal and eye discharges). Rabbits can also be infected if placed in hutches or enclosures that previously housed an infected rabbit.
The first discovered case of Myxo in rabbits was in Uruguay in 1896. The disease was introduced to California in 1928 by importation of an infected domestic rabbit from Mexico.

- Ear diseases and anatomy of a rabbits ear and common issues with rabbit ears.
- A quick story on how do lop ear rabbits have well, floppy ears!
The English Lop is one of the oldest rabbit breeds. Virtually every other lop-eared rabbit is thought to derive from it. The breed could have orignated in Africa, and a rabbit resembling the breed appears in Egyptian Hieroglyphics
. It is speculated that the hot tempatures of Africa caused the rabbit to pump massive amounts of blood through its ears to keep cool; this caused very heavy ears that eventually fell down! The ears continued growing until the animal could compensate for the heat in its environment. Parents with this new trait created a gene for floppy ears and passed it on to their offspring.
INTERESTING, HUH?
The parting shot in the back of the magazine says this quote:
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” -Anatole France
It bought tears to my eyes
