Well, I hope that Sammykins got lots of good treats because that was a pretty darn good trick :~)

Oooo Do you know what type of crane that is? (My dad works at the International Crane Foundation).

              Looks like an egret.

They are part of the heron family.

Actually it’s not an egret – they’re much smaller. (I posted a little video of a bunch of them in my yard earlier this year.)
This is much larger, and they are around here frequently, so I want to say it’s called a Great Heron, or a Great Crane.

LBJ10, I owe you an apology!

I just did a search for it online, and the little birds I shot earlier were ibis.

This guy IS a Great White Egret.

LOL, don’t worry about it. This is what I get for having to memorize birds for a lab practical. There was that one and the insect one. Anyway, we will see a lot of great blue herons around here but not a lot of egrets. I remember seeing one in a marshy area near a lake as I was driving and I wanted to stop the car to look at him.

I love the great blue herons. I live just a few miles from 2 nature walk areas that were created from the water department’s system as sanctuaries. They have tons of herons, egrets, guinea hens, etc. etc. And alligators, turtles, ducks. It’s fun to see them all in one place that’s not a zoo. I bring my camera when I walk, so am resisting the urge to post more pix….

We will get a ton of geese and ducks of all varieties at one of the parks here. I’m not sure what’s so special about this one spot, well except that people will feed them there. What’s weird is that we will see white mallards. I don’t know if people released them or what.

If you want to see some cranes, I might have a video somewhere. I’ll have to find it.

Okay, hopefully this shows up. This is from about 3 years ago. I turned the volume down because it was very windy. If you turn it up you can hear them calling inbetween the “static” from the wind blowing.

I love the shots of them coming in for a landing.
Maybe the wind has something to do with their appearance, because my video had a lot of noisy wind in the background, which is one reason why I put it to music.
I was never an orinthologist – just your average bird loving bird watcher. I get a kick out of the groups that always have a few scruffy brownish teenagers that haven’t gotten their full adult feathers yet.
My mother and I were on the beach one morning and got a show from 2 or 3 adult pelicans who were clearly teaching about a dozen youngsters to fly and fish. They faced them all lined up on the shore. It was like Pelican boot camp.

That is funny.  O loved the video RP

We have the same kind of birds here.  We live between a beach and a river.    There are gray ones that are smaller oh and pelicans can’t forget the pelicans with their overly large droppings.

People get chewed out if found feeding the birds.   They leave large droppings on the dock.  The dock has a cover like a gazebo but still they stand on the edge top of the seats and plop.

Our friends and us watched 3 babies as they grew and could just peek over the nest.  They flew a few months ago.  You could see them practice flapping their wings.

Oh my gosh, it was so windy and cold. I remember I was freezing my butt off. They weren’t very close and I had the camera zoomed in all the way. I was hoping to have clearer shots and video, but this is pretty good. You can see some of their behavior as they interact with each other. Cranes are so neat though, I love their mating rituals.

The wildlife rehab center I used to work at would get a lot of injured Great Blue Herons… they are just gorgeous birds but man those suckers will get ya!! We always had to wear goggles around them. One time, the GBH aimed at a volunteers eyes but aimed at the side of her face and turned her goggles a whole 180 degrees around her head!! If we didnt grab that big beak first, then its allll over from there!

Tipsy Bunny – I bet they are nasty, some birds will just surprise you with how aggressive they are when they are threatened.
