I adopted my 2 year old lionhead, Secundus, about two months ago. He is my first pet rabbit and has been a great addition to my home.

Today I was cleaning up his room and noticed what I’m guessing is urine on the mat outside his litter box. It’s like a light brown color and i’m wondering if this looks normal or looks like I should take him to the vet over it.

His personality seems fine, he’s always running around here, jumping up to get pet and chattering his little teeth. He’s got 24/7 access to fresh water, timothy hay and orchard grass. He regularly gets red leaf lettuce and frequently some carrots or turnips.

When I first got him I bought Brown’s Tropical Blend before reading on here about how bad it was. Now I lay out a bowl of Oxbow Adult Blend but he has hardly any interest in it since getting a taste of the Tropical Blend. He goes absolutely nuts thinking I’m going to lay out the Tropical Blend and usually convinces me to give him maybe 1/4 cup of it.

Bunny urine can be a whole range of colours, from pale yellow to bright red. None of them are cause for concern so you don’t need to worry about that one
It can be affected by diet.

The only time bunny pee is concerning is if it is full of a ‘chalky’ sludge, or if it has clumps of blood in it.

As a side note, carrots should be given in very small quantities as a treat, rather than a diet staple, as they’re very sugary

Oh and the tropical blend – it’s really not healthy so you do need to wean him off it. Eventually he’ll get excited by pellets! My bunnies get so excited by their boring pellets. Has he been eating the pellets at all? You can do a gradual transistion, so give him his normal portion but make 25% of it pellets for a week, then switch to 50/50, then 75% pellets before swapping completely.

Nothing to add here except a link to a webpage with pictures of normal pee vs bladder sludge:
