This morning, my rabbit wouldn’t eat her breakfast or any food I offered her. She even ignored the blueberries I gave to her. She was lethargic and hid under my bed most of the day. I gave her some simethicone in case she had some gas. Around 7 pm, she started eating, pooping, exploring, binkying, and acting normal again. It is later now and she is still acting normal and eating, but her stomach is making some loud gurgling noises. Should I be concerned? If she had not eaten today, I was going to bring her to an emergency vet clinic tomorrow morning. Is that still necessary?

You can start by giving her 1 ml of simethicone baby gas drops once operation hour for 3 hours. The fact that she refused to eat, then started eating again and the gurgle stomach makes me suspect that she had a bout of gas. Gas is often painful for a rabbit  but once the gas passes, the appetite tends to come back right away. Gas drops helps the bun pass gas and they are harmless since they’re not taken up by the body-they do their work in the GI canal and then they get pooped out.

Here is a nice video on how to help a bun with gas pain:

Sometimes we dont find the cause of the odd bout of gas. If it happens again (and again), it could be something in her daily diet that doesn’t agree with her.

It sounds like she is experiencing some gas but is probably working through it. Agree that simethicone and some tummy rubs will probably help. If she’s eating now, push lots of hay and water, no treats, fruits, or starchy veggies. Extra leafy greens that are wet from being rinsed can also help, as long as they aren’t known to cause gas (like the cabbages).

If this happens again in the future, I would not wait until the evening to see her appetite return, because if she had started feeling poorly overnight, that would put you into emergency territory. (And if you waited a full 24 hours from the first symptoms to take her to the ER, that might be too late). If it turns into stasis, the sooner you can start treatment, the better.
