        Hello all!

I am doing a project and I was wondering how many rabbits are euthanized every year? If you post it would be helpful if you could link the website you found the information. Thank you

I can’t seem to find the figure on rabbits, only dogs and cats

I watched this documentary called “Earthlings,” and when I saw a dog being put down, I bawled my eyes out.

I don’t know what the numbers are. They are most likely considerably less than dogs and cats though since there are a lot more dogs and cats in shelters than rabbits. Well, there are a lot more dogs and cats period. I imagine the numbers on that would be pretty difficult to get. Where I live, the most I have seen at the humane society at one time was 3 rabbits. Unless there is something wrong with rabbits that end up there, I don’t think they are euthanized. The rabbits that do come through there tend to get adopted pretty fast, so it isn’t like they don’t have anywhere to house them.

Okay, after a quick Google search it seems that a lot of shelters categorize rabbits under “other” so that is why a lot do not have exact numbers. Other would include a lot of different animals and it is hard telling how many are actually rabbits.

Rabbits seem to be unevenly distributed too. Some parts of the country have tons of rabbits in shelters while others have few.

I spent a fair amount of time searching online today and I could hardly find anything. At our shelter the most we’ve had is five rabbits at a time, but I know the HRS gets a lot more.

Maybe you should just focus on statistics for your area? I think getting real numbers for the whole country would be really difficult. Maybe you could call your local shelter and see if they record rabbits separately.
