Hi , new here , I have a question about my rabbit. She’s a Californian rabbit so her fur is white but she’s always had a little pink spot between the back kinda behind the ears,, but it’s been spreading a bit and today I noticed she had a somewhat cut ? She’s also been shedding a lot lately , does anyone know what it is? And if she’s okay? Should she go to a vet? She is still eating and pooping btw. I left a link to a google drive shared for you guys can see the pics

Backstory : we got her from FFA and we decided to keep her bc we got too attached , we as in my brother joined without having a clue what FFA was , now quitting ! Anyways , I also learned their called “ meat rabbits” so I can’t find much info as pets

Hey there and welcome to the forum!  I hope we can help you out!

Since the spot is spreading, and it wasn’t always there i’m assuming, i would highly suggest making an appointment with a rabbit savvy vet in your area. I also couldn’t view the photo that is in the link, it said my google account didn’t have permission to.

Since there is now a cut or break in the skin that happened, definitely take them to a vet. If you don’t know of any vets in your area that are rabbit savvy, you could go to the “RESOURCES” tab at the top of this website and scroll all the way down to the “VETS” section.

The webmaster(s) wonderfully put together quite a few links to websites that help you find vets in your area/country that know what they are doing with bunnies. Its important to find a vet that knows rabbits, that way they can effectively diagnose and treat your fur-baby!

          Please keep us updated!

            Hi there,

I wasn’t able to see the photo, but from what you describe it sounds like it might be a fungal infection, like ringworm. You should take her to the vet to confirm. If that’s the case, they will give you a cream to put on it. The shedding could be related, or she could just be molting because it’s spring time.

Common breeds that are called “meat rabbits” are New Zealand whites, or California white.

It could be ringworm, a condition that’s not caused by worms at all but by fungus. The bun can need an ointment or both an oral antifungal and an ointment. We have a member called Wick who has a ringworm-prone little bunny called Wick. Here’s one of their threads about Wick’s ringworm: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/163546/Default.aspx

Do you see any dandruff on/around the bald spot? It doesn’t look like there is any, but if there is dandruff, it could be fur mites and the sore could be from your bun trying to scratch herself, because fur mites can cause itching. Fur mites are very common. The best remedy is Revolution or ivermectin. Both are prescription only drugs. Now the warning we always issue when skin parasites are being discussed: Never use any compound containing fipronil on rabbits. It’s deadly toxic to rabbits. It’s sold under a variety of brand names, the most common of which probably is Frontline.

Rabbits can shed in patches, so it could still be normal shedding.

It looks like she’s a California White or a California White mix. Calif White is a breed often used as meat rabbits. They have a good temperament and make excellent pets. They have a really cool gene that makes their ears, paws and nose darker in the winter and lighter in the summer.

I don’t see any dandruff , so can it still be ringworm ? She also had that since we got her in October (2017) but like I said it expanded a bit and noticing the little cut has me so worried , thank you . If she is diagnosed with fur mites I’ll update u and thank you for the tip of not using fipronil, I’ll look at the ingredients when I find a remedy or given one by a vet.
