I was looking at Zeus and Freya’s set up tonight and I was thinking about why I have their cages.

Seriously. They both have a puppy pen with a large rabbit cage inside. The thinking behind that WAS so they had somewhere to hide if they wanted to… except they never do. Hide that is.

the only time they go in their cages if is they don’t want to use their litter trays (so they use their cage instead) and it seems to me that they don’t actually need them anymore.

Would it not be better to remove the cage completely? Then they will have almost double the space to hop around in. I could get some dowling and make a second level for them to sit on and under as well.

I know Zeus won’t be in his cage much longer, he will be too big to get in and out the door within a couple of months.

Both are fairly reliabley litter trained (they wee in the tray, but they still drop pellets around which is fine, they can’t ‘hold it in’ like humans can) but should I stick lino in there for them to play on a different surface? Or would I be better keeping the cages in there just incase?

I think taking out their cages would be fine. You could always put a blanket or cardboard over half the shared pen wall to give them the option of privacy. I would make sure any levels are on the far sides to prevent them from using them to jump into each other’s pens.

          This is what I mean:

I’m not suggesting you make levels half a pen in size or anything. I would just keep levels in that zone.

Yeah, their cages are already at the far end of each other and covered with cardboard so they can jump if there if they wish,

I am thinking having the second level along the back wall of both cages, and having a blanket over the entire top of that (so even if they jump onto the second floor, they cant jump straight over the top, you know what I mean?)

Oh! Okay. Haha, I misunderstood how they were set up. I think your idea sounds great.

                Haha no problem
And thanks. I think tomorrow I might visit the local DIY outlet
I need to walk more anyway and that should be a roughly 5 mile plus walk easily
