        Hello everyone,

I have noticed bald spots around my rabbits chin and mouth areas. He is a 9 year old male rabbit, and it has never happened before. I first noticed the balding spot under his chin, but upon further inspection it also appeared on the front of his neck and also near his mouth. The skin feels slightly rough and dry. He is okay with me touching it.

Is it possible that it is fur  mites? hoping to hear a second opinion. i have provided pictures below, thank you!

Considering the location, it is more likely related to something moisture-driven, such as drool from the mouth (common when dental irritation occurs) or soaked chin from drinking water facilitating a fungal infection/fur loss in general.

Is the skin flaky at all? As Wick said, it could be from drooling. But if it’s dry and rough, it could be a skin infection. Fungal infections can sometimes present this way.

It’s more dry, I haven’t noticed any flaking. I do suspect that it may be due to his water bowl… what else do you suggest besides changing the bowl?

If it is a fungal infection, then it will need to be treated. Otherwise, yes, trying a water bottle may help.

Looking at the photos, it appears as though there is some thinning of the fun underneath his whiskers too. That also suggests this is some type of skin issue too.
