Okay. This morning I woke up to find that Juniper had chewed through my headphone cord. Which is fine whatever I was going to buy a new pair anyway. HOWEVER I can’t find the jack. And now I’m terrified that she ate it. Does anyone here have experience with this? I can’t even imagine why a rabbit would eat the jack, I mean, it’s solid metal right? It’s not like they’d swallow it whole? Right??

I’m thinking I should take her to an emergency vet for x-rays. I have work late tonight and I don’t want to be gone while my baby is dying of an obstruction!!

I don’t think a bunny could swallow a solid metal object like a headphone jack. Rabbits have a very narrow passage between their esophagus and stomach – so contrary to dogs and cats and small children, they tend to chew what they eat very well, or they might choke. We have had sad stories here about choking buns, that can happen to greedy buns that inhale their pellets. It happens very fast and it’s dramatic. Not sth you’d miss.

I think it’s more likely that the jack is somewhere else. If it’s magnetic maybe you could find it with the help of a magnet? A rabbit savvy vet would probably be able to tell you if there is a possibility that she could’ve swallowed the jack. A non-rabbit savvy vet would perhaps want to x-ray just to make extra sure.

We’d be very happy for updates.

Okay so right after posting this is I read extensively on the rabbit digestive system to get a good idea on what times I should be on the look out for issues. It said that after swallowing food, it usually takes 3-6 hours for that food to move from the stomach to the small intestine. So I checked on her at 2 pm which was past the 6 hour mark. I gave her some hay and she gladly munched it. That was a good enough sign for me to go on ahead to work as usual. I got home at 11pm and immediately checked on her. She seems totally fine. She was jumping around and binkying and taking any treat I offered her. We’re now at 19 hours since she chewed my headphones. Supposedly a total gastric transit time for rabbits is 20 hours. If she did swallow something I will 100% know by tomorrow morning.

I will try your suggestion on using a magnet to try and locate the missing jack. And in an attempt to prevent another incident like this in the future, I ordered a brand new pair of Bluetooth headphones lol
