My questions are I give kamdyn .3ml of metacam
twice a day. I was busy today doing laundry and forgot to give him the
medication I normally give it between 10:30 and 11:30. Since I forgot today I
went to give it at 1:00. Before I gave it to him I looked at him and he didn’t
seem like he was in any type of pain. So I am wondering if he needs the
medication or only needs it when he is in pain? I was told by 2 vets that he has
a cancerous tumour on his spine. He does scoot around and he pees and poops
mostly outside his litterbox. The vet told me to give the metcam as needed. I
don’t want kamdyn to be in pain so that is why I started to give him the metacam
twice a day. He had blood work done back in may and it came back good showing
that the metacam hasn’t caused liver damage or anything. My next question is. I
use the bottom of a dog carrier as kams litterbox. He does pee and poop mostly
outside the litterbox so I was wondering if I could just get rid of the
litterbox all together. I do put fake sherpa rug on the floor of his cage to
wick away urine. If i do get rid of the litterbox I would put some hay in the
place where the litterbox because I always put the hay in the litterbox. Is that
ok to put the hay there or should I buy a hay rack. I am going to watch my
rabbit closely for a few days to see how often I see him in his litterbox.

Since he doesn’t seem to be in any type of pain, I think you’re safe to cut back on the metacam and only give it again if he’s in pain.

As I have a whole different type of litterbox setup with my buns, i’ll let someone else advise you there.

I would discuss this with your vet. We’re certainly not qualified to advise you to reduce meds. Ask the vet if he thinks it’s necessary to give twice a day (how long does it work for: 4, 8, 12 hours?) If so, could you give half a doze twice a day? In my mind, I wouldn’t want to overmedicate him. You want him to be able to react if something is hurting him so you know. But again, ask the vet.

Here’s my feeling – it’s very difficult to tell when a rabbit is in pain sometimes – they are prey animals and they hide their pain. I imagine if he has a cancerous tumor on his spine, he is uncomfortable and he’s obviously not as mobile as a normal rabbit. Some vets are prescribing metacam twice daily for those cases where the rabbit has extreme pain.

But as Beka says, always discuss this with your vet first and foremost.

I had a rabbit who another rabbit who had debilitating arthritis and one of her legs was atrophied and in the end I just took her litter box away – she could only scoot around. She couldn’t even get in the litterbox.

Thanks sarita so your rabbit just scooted around his cage and did he pee and poop around his cage where ever he wanted? My rabbit already is peeing and pooping where ever in his cage. Thanks

She did. I just used some carpets with plastic backing that I could toss in the wash and air dry.

I have to say it was alot of work and she had urine scald all the time. She was a very large and beautiful New Zealand White.

I did eventually have to let her go to the bridge – her quality of life was deteriorating and she was getting very frustrated because she was no longer mobile and I know she was in pain and uncomfortable.
