Question about pain med after spay/neuter?

Hi All, 

I’m new here, I haven’t really posted before. But I have an issue with my buns today that I would like to get an opinion on. 

My buns, Lola and Dexter, just got back from their surgeries. The vet said he noticed they were eating hay and they fed them critical care. A couple of hours later we got to take them home, and while Dexter is moving around and happily munching as usual, Lola seems to be taking it worse. She wont eat any hay, pellets, greens, or carrot, but she just ate a small slice of apple and drank a bit of water. She used the bathroom (everywhere but in her litterbox ha). The nurse tech said we should give of the buns their paid med tonight, but she has not eaten really well. Should I give her the med on an empty tummy? I don’t want to make her sick, but I don’t want her to suffer. I would call them but they are closed currently. 

As for Dexter, he is eating and moving around fine, but his poop seems to be different. It is smaller, darker, and looks slimy. On the bottle of pain med, it says to not give to them unless they eat, have water, and do not have tarry black stool. 

I am pretty nervous night now…. I have no idea what to do.

Youll have to syringe feed your female some critical care every few hours and syringe feed her water as well. After shes fed and watered, give her her dose of medication. Monitor her poops. Call the vet if you see blood on the wound or in her stool, and/or if her poops start to become liquidy. If your male is eating, he should be fine taking the meds whenever the time comes. I also want to add, in case you havent already, youll want to keep them separated for the next month. You dont want them to irritate eachothers wounds, and hormones are likely to still be lingering

The females surgery is a lot harder on their bodies as theyre being sliced open where as the males just get two small cuts.

Agree with Mikey, you need to get some food in her. It’s normal though for a girl bun to be pretty out of it for some time after a neuter, but if she’s not eaten anything in ca 12 hours, you’ll need to feed her. If you don’t have critical care you can use pellet mash. Feed her some, it doesn’t have to be a huge amount at first, then give the pain med. Hopefully alleviating the pain will make her start to eat on her own. Metacam can be hard on the tummy, that’s why you shouldn’t give it on an empty tum. I’m very happy to hear she’s been pottying even if she did it outside the actual potty sts.

As Mikey also says, neutering a boy is minor surgery, whereas with a girl it’s a much more invasive procedure, so boys tend to bounce right back while girls need longer time. It’s recommended you keep them apart for at least 2 weeks for the sake of the girl’s healing-process.

You might also soon start to see some extra hormonal behavior, with pee- and poopmarking, territorial aggression, honking and grunting and mounting inanimate objects, but that’s normal after a de-sexing when their bodies and brains are adjusting.

Thank you all for answering! I did end up calling the vet and he gave me critical care to give her (the nurse we met with post OP forgot to give me some…)

Since then both her and my boy Dexter have been doing great and we are starting bonding! I am glad to have a place like this to receive advice for my buns, and I greatly appreciate your responses!
