So we rescued a bunny from a livestock market, her name is Emma and we were told she is six years old. We have had lots of experience with rabbits some of our rabbits were less domestic but I have never seen a rabbit this bad, you can’t pick her up safely, she is unpredictable and will squirm unexpectedly, and you can’t approach her cage without her stomping her foot and running to the corner, she seems to just hate us and I don’t know how to help her.

          Thank you for rescuing Emma!

I dont belive she hates you. I think she just doesn’t know that you can be trusted. I think you can convince her, slowly but steadily. With the emphasis on slowly.

I found a fully adult bun in the woods back in the day, my avatar, Bam. He pretty much sat still under the coffee table for a whole year before he -as it seemed quite abruptly – ventured out and started to socialize with his “new” humans. I think he needed that time. I dont know what conditions he’d been living in before he was dumped in the woods, he wasnt malnourished but he had a rather bad case of fur mites (which we of course treated him for).

In short, rabbits can need quite a bit of time before they realize they’re safe.

Poor baby! The best thing you can do is give her lots of time to settle in without handling her. Ideally she could be let out to exercise without being picked up, and she should have at least a week to settle in to her housing before you try to interact with her much. She sounds like she was from a very scary place.

At 6 years old, it is very likely that she is developing uterine cancer, so I would plan to get her spayed ASAP if you can. If they catch it early they can usually remove it all.
