For those outside of New England, we have had quite a few nor’easters in the past few weeks. Just north of Boston I have lost power twice in the span of a week. No power means no heat, unfortunately. The whole house is hardwood flooring, and the two rooms we rent out have multiple windows and skylights, making it nearly freezing without power. We had to go out to dinner in order to eat, and when we returned home the poor boys were huddled up and looked like they were shivering. Is there anything I can do to make them more comfortable? I put some fleece blankets in their cages, as well as mixed their normal water with hot water to drink (which turned icy in about 5 minutes). Any other suggestions, if this happens again? Our power was supposed to be out for 2 days, but luckily it came back a day later. When the thermostat kicked back in, it was reading the lowest number at 55, but I think it was much colder than that.

          Poor babies And poor humans!

Hmm… maybe to pass the coldest hours you could use battery operated or chargeable heat pads? Like those thin ones for tanks?

Don’t forget that hay is a very good insulating material, so you could stuff a box or their hutch with hay and let them make their own warm nest. I keep the heating off at night and hay’s what keeps K warm when it’s cold early in the morning.

The weather has definitely had it in for the NE lately. Thank goodness your power wasn’t out for longer! Luna’s cage sits on the floor, so during the winter, I put a thick towel on the floor then put her cage on top of the towel. The towel underneath acts like an insulator and makes the floor of her cage feel noticeably less cold. There’s also a window across the room on the right side of her cage, so when it gets really cold, I hang a fleece blanket over the right side of her cage to block any drafts/chills.

Thanks guys for the suggestions! I’ll definitely have to try the battery powered heating pad, and the towel underneath the floor! They pull their hay out of their racks anyways, but they never sit in it. They will sit in their litter boxes till kingdom come xD I’ve tried the towels over the side, but they get excited and pull them down.

Garfy: LOL I was literally prepared to do that last night if the power hadn’t come back on. I was like these boys will not die on my watch. I will cuddle them all night and day if I have to.

I would put some hidey boxes with blankets underneath so they have a warm flooring. If the boxes are quite small/snug, it might keep them warmer too. You could then layer blankets over the top to make it really toasty.

Their cages have a little hidey-area, so that’s a great idea to put the blankets in there. Thanks Sarah!
