Potty issue? de-clawing!?!

 So I introduced Thumper and Houdini to everyone in Auguast. We have had our ups and downs. Mostly ups Houdini has been social and Thumper is the more antisocial of the two. They are both coming into thier hormones and I dont like that too much. They are both males and I am pretty sure they have “dropped” so we will be going to the vet soon.

 

So I have two questions: 

1. Potty training: they pee in the boxes but seem to be pooping everywhere? its seems to be getting worse, could this be hormones?? I have a large box in the kennell and two in the room (three total)   I let them spend 75% of thier time loose in a bedroom. or running the house, they are only cooped up if i have to go out of town and sometimes while i am at work. 

2. Had a house visit from my church, and low and behold, it was the vet I intend to use who came to see us. while there he mentioned de-clawing the bunnies??? has anyone ever heard of this in rabbits. and what are your thoughts???

any insights to my bunnies behaving badly is appreciated!

Definitely no to the de-clawing!! That would be like chopping off the tips of your fingers to get rid of your fingernails . I think you might want to look into another vet…have you tried the House Rabbit Society listing?

For potty training, it could definitely be related to hormones, and there’s a good chance that their habits will improve after neutering.  Are you absolutely 100% sure that both your bunnies are male?  It happens all the time that people are mistaken…one of mine that I thought was female turned out to be a male, and the same happened to somebody else on the forum just today.  With just a single bunny it isn’t a big deal, but it gets more risky when there’s the possibility that you might have an unfixed male and female together.

 Did he actually say “de-claw?”    Or did he say “shorten” or “cut?”  Or could he have been saying “dew claw?”  Was he totally clear your pet was a rabbit, and not a cat?

It is necessary to regularly trim your bunny’s claws.  De-clawing is weird though.  I think de-clawing a bunny would make growing difficult, and the bunny might injure his paws if he tried to dig without claws.  I would not be thinking of taking my bunny to that vet if I was sure he was talking about de-clawing a rabbit.

Declawing is very cruel to an animal.

On the potty training: Easier done after neuter/spay, and limit the run around space.

If a vet mentions de-clawing a rabbit, I would run away as fast as I can and find another vet.

Declawing isn’t good for any animal, even cats. They cut off part of each toe, a very painful procedure and even can cause pain/health problems in the future. Ouch, as Peppypoo said, it would be exactly the same as cutting off each part of your finger to where the nail starts growing (farther than you would think). As much as sometimes I wish my cats and rabbit didn’t have claws after scratches or damaged furniture that is something I would never even consider. If you keep the nails clipped it shouldn’t be a problem (: But a rabbit savvy vet should know that.

Declawing for cats has been banned in many countries because it is painful and inhumane and we’ll see this banned in many more countries as the years go by (for anyone with declawed cats, I mean no offense, it was par for the course to declaw your cat when it got fixed so I understand-no offense intended) -it’s ten amputations of the last digit. It’s awful.

I would RUN from that vet. Run. I wouldn’t see the vet for a prescription refill if they are ‘selling’ rabbit declawing. Ridiculous.

On the potty issues, neutering soon will help as will limiting their time out. Are they bonded yet? Perhaps they coudl get neutered at the same time so you can start from scratch on litter training. (Neuter…with a different vet )
But basically-keeping everything spotless, putting mistakes in the litter box, limiting room to run and spay/neutering is your formula for litter habits

Declawing a rabbit? I have never heard of such a thing. Sounds very strange. My kitty was declawed. He came that way though. I realize it is pretty common, even now that people are becoming more educated about it. Never ever have I heard of someone having their rabbit declawed. I don’t see what the point would be. I mean, it’s not like they are sitting there scratching your couch into shreds (which is why people declaw their cat).

Declawing a rabbit… just seems wrong. There is no reason. If they dig, give them a dig box. It is considered animal cruelty to declaw in many countries, as people have stated. My brothers girlfriend had her cat declawed without even so much as buying it a scratching post and she had to go from vet, to vet, to vet to find one that would do it for her based on ethical reasons – most vets consider it a last resort, or simply refuse to do it. Find a new vet in my opinion, no vet should recommend a declaw without good reason.

And yes the droppings all over is marking, be careful their hormones don’t cause fighting before you can get them fixed.

I work in a vet clinic and have never heard of rabbit declawing… 😐 Cat and rabbits nails are completely different! Cat declawing is the most grusome surgery I have ever seen next to ear cropping and amputation (and at least amputation is done when necessary). The cats are in huge amounts of pain and we use a pain patch, put on 24 hours before the surgery that lasts for a couple days, on top of injectable pain meds just to stay on top of it. Completely ridiculous and unnecessary surgery in my opinion. The only time my clinic declaws is when the owners have another declawed cat in the house.

Thanks for the info . I thought the declaw thing was weird and had no i ntention of doing it, but it made me have concernes about the vet I think they are bonded, but also think they are fighting and humping each other to oblivion….so neuter both asap and on lockdown till they behave better!

Mama – are they seperated at all? If they are not, a pregnancy can and will occur.unfixed rabbits cannot be bonded – they have only one thing on their mind.

No they are not seperated, by the time I thought about it I figured what’s done was done, but if were are to be blessed with baby bunnies I will have another learning expierence on my hands. Good thing I have enough info to make better adoptions though. Time will tell, no signs of pregnancy as far as I can. Tell, though I am not sure if I could tell

You need to separate them like, yesterday. Bunnies can have double litters which can be deadly to both the mom and the babies. Bunnies aren’t like humans, they don’t have a cycle, they ovulate when they have sex, and the boy will continue to harass her pregnant or not.

I would seperate them asap. baby rabbits are really expensive =/

You were not clear in your initial post if they are both males (I assumed from their names) or if they are male/female.  If one is female, even tho there is a possibility that she may already be pregnant, they still need to be separated immediately.  As mentioned, rabbits can carry two pregnancies at once, but this can be fatal.  And if they have not been sexed by a vet, this also needs to be done soon.  We might be worrying over nothing (re: pregnancy).  Males will hump anything and anyone, even each other.  But two unneutered males can go from “amorous” to vicious fighting in a blink of an eye…  For their safety, they need to be separated regardless of sex.

Knowing that a pregnancy may result if you don’t separate your rabbits, but still keeping them together is considered intentional breeding, and this is a topic not permitted on the forum.  So at this point, if a pregnancy did result, you would not be allowed to mention it on-board.
