A friend I know is having it hard and asked me to post on here in her behalf. Her rabbit is losing weight rapidly, he was 10 pounds (roughly 4.53-5 kilograms) and less than a week later was down to 7 pounds (3.17 roughly in kilograms) and again, only a few days later down to 6.8 pounds (3.08 roughly again in kilograms). She took him to her rabbit savvy vet and to a rabbit savvy emergency vet but they told her that they couldn’t find anything wrong. He’s eating normally, drinking normally and doing all his normal things. She got him around 4 years ago when he was around 6 weeks old so it can’t be due to age can it? How can she get him to gain some weight? And do you have any idea what could be going on? Thanks for any help that you can give her.

Does he have any other symptoms aside from the weight loss?

No, that’s pretty much all I know.

Something is wrong if a rabbit loses weight that rapidly. Especially if the bun is eating and drinking normally. How old is the bun? Is the bun spayed/neutered?

I agree there is something wrong. It sounds like the rabbit is around 4 years old? If the rabbit is unspayed it could be cancer. Do you know what types of diagnostics were done? Blood work, imaging, etc?

Yep about the age. He’s not neutered and I don’t know, she just said that they did an exam then took him to the back for a bit and brought him back to her saying that they couldn’t find anything but that’s about all I know.

Did the vets suggest any type of course of action?

Uterine cancer is of course not an issue with a male bun, intact or not,  but there are other types of cancers that can affect both males and femals, f ex blood cancer. To diagnose that, a blood panel is of need.

Wasting, i e losing both fatty tissue weight and muscular mass, can be a symptom of many things. There could be a heart issue, kidney problems, if he drinks and pees a lot it could be E c or even diabetes, although diabetes is rare in rabbits.

Sorry for the late reply, had to wait until she replied. No, they basically only said to keep an eye on him. They did blood tests and said everything looked normal, she said they did everything except x-rays.

Yes, this is why I was asking if there were any other symptoms. Rapid weight loss is most definitely concerning. But, unfortunately, it could be caused by any number of things. Rapid weight loss alone is not much to go on. I would say it could be some kind of cancer too. The vet can do x-rays and blood work.

I got a message from her today and she wants to apologize, she figured out what made her male lose weight. Her female was being a bully to him, she chased him away from the hay rack so she’s going to seperate them and hope for the best.

                              Ohh!

No need to apologize obviously! Just so great that she’s found out the cause of his weight loss, and that it isn’t some horrible illness!
