› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Possible EC!
So I was talking to a fellow bunny friend and told them Mocha’s symptoms. She said her rabbit had the same symptoms and was diagnosed and treated successfully for EC. I can’t get to the vet until Tuesday as I am currently out of town. I am really nervous. Do you think he will be ok until then? He is eating and drinking fine and doesn’t seem to be sick. For those who are wondering, here are his symptoms:
Weight loss
Possible excessive drinking (not sure if it’s him or lulu for sure)
Big mushy poop
Smaller normal poop
I plan to have a titer test on Tuesday to see if he has EC. Could these symptoms be for something else too?
The symptoms could very well be for lots of other things. Weight loss and changes in poop are very broad symptoms that can occur with almost any other illness. Excessive drinking is not quite as common, but it still doesn’t point directly to EC. You have a responsible person caring for your bunnies while you are gone, correct? Could that person carefully monitor the symptoms and take Mocha to the vet if need be? I am not much help, but I just wanted to add some (((((Get well soon mocha))))) vibes and I hope you can figure this out!
Mocha have his teeth checked – he’s a lop and about the age when dental problems set in.
Yes! My parents are taking care of the bunnies and they even video called me last night so I could see them. They know what’s going in and are carefully watching him.
Sarita: yes he was checked last Tuesday by the vet when I discovered his weight loss. They took X-rays and his teeth were slightly overgrown but not bad enough to put in under to file them down. She said if he continued to lose weight she would file them down.
Some rabbits are just more sensitive about their overgrown teeth and drinking alot is usually a sign – they are trying to soothe their mouth.
Ok thanks! At what point hould I get them done? ASAP?
I would sooner rather than later. Next week would be fine I think.
My Dad just called me and said Mocha didn’t eat his veggies this morning. He still are treats though. I was supposed to be out of town till tomorrow but I am heading home early. I honestly don’t know what’s going on with him! I don’t really trust my vet either as I found out I went the wrong vet last time! I don’t even know if I will get the vet I want when I take him in.
Should I take him in when I get home or would it be ok to wait till tomorrow if he’s still eating some? I plan to call the vet when I get home and see what they say to do. I’m so nervous!
Wait until tomorrow otherwise it would be an emergency and that would be too expensive and they really can only treat not actually diagnose.
I just got home. He seemed a little scared but he always is when company is over (football game). He came running for treats and ate them just fine he just wouldn’t eat veggies. I’m going to see if he will eat his veggies tonight.
I’m hoping you can get things figured out soon. ((((Mocha))))) When Bindi needs his teeth done, the symptoms that usual alert me are weightloss and mushy poops. Mocha may just be sensitive and his mouth is hurting.
Ok thanks LPT! He doesn’t had any spurs yet, his roots are just growing down kind of deep. Could that cause pain?
Also, I just noticed tons of pee dribbles all over. I still don’t know who it is since last time I separated them they managed to escape. I think I might go ahead and set up 2 xpens and see if I can see who it is before tomorrow. I don’t want to stress mocha out anymore but I think it would be best to know if it was him or Lulu who’s leaving them. What do you all think?
I think that determining WHO it is, will take you a step closer to determining WHAT it is. Set the X-pens up close to each other though, so the bunnies don’t get stressed from losing sight of each other. I know that they free range in the bunny room usually, so it will probably upset them if they can’t see/smell each other.
(((Vibes for the bunnies))) (((hugs for you)))
Last night Mocha ate all his veggies along with eating hay and drinking fine. They are still separated although I did find one small pee dribble in Lulus cage this morning. I will probably put them back together tonight or tomorrow morning. I’m just waiting to see if she leaves more spots.
Hasn’t Lulu dribbled pee in the past? Sorry, I have watched your YouTube for a long time and I seem to remember you saying something like that… If so, what was the issue then?
Yes she has. My vet suspected a UTI but never tested for sure as her bladder was always empty. She got antibiotics and it went away. she said to stop giving pellets as it has a lot of calcium in it. She was pellet free for over a year when someone recommended I feed at least 1 table spoon per week as veggies alone can’t provide enough nutrients. Bad choice. I started noticing the pee dribbles a few weeks after introducing pellets again. Bottom line, listen to what your vet says to do… I’m a little mad I listened to that lady…
I’m going to check for more urine once I get home (about an hour) and make sure it’s just Lulu, not both of them.
Yes I would listen to your vet, don’t feed them pellets if it causes problems. Veggies can provide the required nutrients as long as you give a wide variety.
Just got back from the vet! I am very happy with the turn out as it is a super easy fix.
They tested Lulu’s urine and she has a bladder infection which is what I suspected. The vet also said she was the one drinking more water because of the infection. She is on 1/2 a pill in the morning and 1/2 a pill at night. I have to crush it up and mix it with water and syringe feed it. She says if Lulu won’t take it then I can have it made into a liquid form on Thursday.
They weighed Mocha and he has gained wait from his last visit! Yay! Maybe this new oxbow hay helped?! All I know is that I’m glad this was an easy fix!
Yay! Glad it wasn’t anything serious. ![]()
Great news! ![]()
Good to know – vibes for Lulu!
Get well soon Lulu!
((((LuLu – speedy recovery vibes))))
That’s great about Mocha!
