So, after having just gone through GDV surgery at the end of May, it looks like it’s back to the vet for my 12 year old dog, Taiku. He is finally gaining enough weight and apparently has enough energy that he’s displaying some bawdy behaviour again. Poor Shadow, (my other male dog-14 years), who has to bunk with him, is not up for any funny business. (Taiku is trying to show dominance. I’ve had enough of that with the bunnies, thank you very much.)
So to keep Taiku from hurting Shadow and possibly himself, I am talking to the vet tomorrow about the possibility of getting him neutered, finally! >.< I know, risky business...but I think if he got through the anesthesia that had him down for the GDV, he can make it through a little procedure like this. (Seperate lodgings would make for a cold winter for both of them.) If doc doesn't think he can handle it, we'll just have to look into something else.
Perhaps saltpeter. 0_o j/k
Anyone here have experience with neutering an older dog and what can be expected? Does it leave them in a great deal of pain, for instance? I would figure it’s easier on the male dog than for an older female to be spayed. We’ve waited this long because 1) we didn’t have any intact females left in the yard and 2) most of the time when we wanted to have him done, cash was pitifully short.
I’m betting he’ll make it through just fine. He’s an ornery old bugger.
