› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Poor miserable buns :(
We are without heat, A/C and hot water until someone can come by and fix it (with a weekend… not likely until Monday). Our basement is flooded and our sump pump isn't working. Lovely. Our land lord is not responding to our calls. Lovely again. We tried to get pumps we can buy for under $100 and they aren't strong enough to bring the water up and out the door. So, short of buying a $400 pump, I am not sure what to do. And I don't have a spare $400 laying around.
I have no credit card (I have cash… but yeah, they need a credit card for security), so I can't rent one.
The buns are NOT happy! Stickers usually sleeps on top of A/C vents letting the air blow onto her belly, Powder hates the heat. It's in the 80s and they like the 60s. My babies are miserable. ![]()
And … humans aren't too happy either. No hot showers, no A/C and 90 degree weather. I have to take cold showers or be very smelly. Ahhh!
Boo! Such a pain that all things have coincided.
So the pump is beyond repair?
Can you do ice bottles & fans for the buns?
I think I’d be sneaking in to use showers somewhere. Gym, holiday park…
Hot weather makes things that much more miserable IMO. Hope things are resolved soon.
Have no idea if the pump is beyond repair, but I can’t get it to work
and weekend means no one available to come do it.
What a pain! I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.
Do you maybe have a friend or relative that would let you use their credit card for the rental? Even if they don’t live in the area (if you don’t live near your family) most places will take one over the phone.
Years ago a forum leader said about fixya.com resource. It’s been a fave of mine ever since. Could be worth a look for DIY fix provided parts aren’t needed.
My washing machine pump went once (I know, completely different size pump) and the only problem was a bit of plastic had made its way into the motor somehow.
For cooling could you maybe buy a swamp cooler… Not as good as AC but reasonably inexpensive and will knock the temperature down quite a bit… Even use a bush cooler… One or two electric fans and some wet towels hung on clothes airers.
If you have a bath tub you can always half fill with cold water and dump in some kettles of boiled water… Not ideal but atleast you can get clean in warmish water.. My bathroom reno’s start next week so I just had to hire a portable ensuite… It’s like a little bathroom mounted in a horse trailer…
Thanks guys.
@ Move – they require the ID match the credit card name. I have access to other peoples CC’s but since they are all out of state… doesn’t do me much good. My ID doesn’t match their card.
For cooling I have fans and ceiling fans. But, only A/C is good enough for them. I can’t use frozen water bottles because Stickers eats plastic… any plastic. Plastic water bottle? Tasty! That is one reason I had to switch them to ceramic bowls for water, she ate all the water bottles, even when she was inside a cage and the bottle was on the outside.. and I have no idea how she did that. If it isn’t metal or ceramic, it’s food. o.O It’s not hot enough to be dangerous for them, but it’s hot enough they don’t like it. They decided to show their displeasure with me by making their room smell like a skunk has sprayed it. *frown*
@Jersey – There is no place to take showers around here. Unless I were to walk up to a neighbor and ask. But, given I don’t know any of them, they’d find it creepy I bet.
lol Surrounded by houses and farms, nearest gym or anything is a 20 mile drive and erm, with gas prices that is one pricey shower. So, I will probably just suffer with the cold water.
This keeps getting better. Water has caused a gas leak in the basement. Was getting ready for bed and smelled gas in the kitchen. Half an hour earlier, the bird had let out his warning danger call but I thouht he was just freaking out over a bug so put him to bed. Lesson learned : listen to the animals, even if they tend to call wolf sometimes. Sitting in the garage (not connected) with the buns and bird now waiting for the gas company at 2am…
Hang in there. You’re almost thru the weekend right?
Yeah. Our landlord got back to us, they were out of town and forgot the cell phone. Plumber is here now. Didn’t get to bed until 4am though and plumber came at 8, so tired! Lol Had to let the gas air out of the house after they shut off the main. Poor buns were thumping and huddling together the whole time in the garage and came back in they were like “yay! Home! *mark*” ha
A/C is still broken, they have to get insurance to pay for a whole new furnace so we don’t know when it’ll be here. :s It’s 90F during the day and 40-50F at night, so we’re all both cold and hot depending on time of day! Been keeping the buns cool with getting the top layer of fur and their ears a little wet and running all the fans, they won’t go near ice bottles. :s
And… all that lovely work we had done to get them using their litter boxes, gone, gone, gone. I’m worried I will have to start from square one with them again if they don’t get over it when the house goes back to normal.
For now, i’m lucky if they pee even once in their boxes.
Oh my God, this sounds like a really horrible thing that is happening to you I don’t even know where to start
Cmere and let me give you and your rabbits a big hug
Maybe they wont go near the waterbottles because they’re not quite that desperate yet. Could be a good thing!
Thanks. They came out Monday to fix the plumbing, Tuesday to look at the furnace, Wednesday to fix it, Thursday to inspect it and things are all fixed up, finally! Ended up having to wet a paper towel down and pet the buns with that to keep them cooled off, they were panting and breathing heavy when it got up to 91.
But, now they are flopping on top of their A/C vents again, so all is well. lol
