Poor Echo! – Broken bunny bond!

So, I’ve been keeping the buns separate since Sunday. I tried to have them together briefly yesterday morning, but it was just scuffle after scuffle, so I nipped it in the bud. Anyway, I only have the one cage for the bunnies, so Echo has been in it for almost the whole time since Sunday night! Poor little munchkin. She has toys and her beloved phonebook, but I feel bad for the little baby. She really wants to come out. The problem is that I just don’t have time to let her out. She is not yet able to be alone in the house, and I have an extremely busy week. I was gone all day yesterday and went to bed as soon as I got home last night, as it was very late. Today will be the same. Then tomorrow is her surgery (Thank God!).

Anyway… I just want to make sure that, while the situation is not ideal, Echo will be okay to stay in the cage for so long, right? All I can say is “Thank goodness the surgery is tomorrow!”

I used to give Fluffy freedom. He had permission to hang around during my absence, until.. I found he “re-decorated” 4 jeans, a shirt and some sweaters with some holes. That never had happend before, even he stay with my clothes. So, I took for granted that he’s only interested in paper, besides food. I really wanna give him more free time but now it’s reduced from all day to 4-5 hours when my wife and/or I present. Poor Fluffy

Oh, I’m starting to get nervous! I know that my vet is very experienced and that she specializes in exotic animals, but I can’t help but worry and stress over the surgery. I just want my little baby girl to be okay…

I do have a question, though: The buns have a multi level condo that I didn’t have when Calypso had his surgery. I know it’s not good for them to jump, so should I block off the upper levels or would it be okay to just leave it open and let her go to the top (that’s her favourite spot)? Alternatively, I have a small temporary cage that I used when I was bonding the buns. It’s just one level and 1 NIC x 2 NIC. Would that be the best place to put her since she wouldn’t be able to move around much?

I had anxiety also when Hunny was getting fixed. I will be thinking of your sweet cutie bunny for her to be fine. Hunny wanted to be active right after the surgery so I had to keep her caged for a day or so.

I would use the smaller cage, she could really hurt herself trying to jump in the leveled one.
My vet had me separate my guys so that the other one would not chew or lick the stitches.
She said to keep them right beside each other though so they could nose lick through the bars & sleep beside each other.
She said it’s important that the other bun can smell the freshly speutered one as the hormones disapate or you may have to start over with bonding.
Something about them not recognizing the new smell of their mate so it’s best to let them smell while healing.
I let them have short supervised cuddle sessions too but no running or jumping etc.

Thanks for the advice and vibes for my baby. I agree that keeping her in the small cage would be best, and I’ll just leave Calypso free range while she’s in there, so that he can keep her company. I’m also going to take him with me to pick her up, because I remember somebody saying that that would help with the strange smell issue…

Well, I should try to get some sleep, unlikely as that may be. My stomach is already doing flip flops.

I dropped Echo off this morning. Calypso is EXTREMELY confused. He keeps exploring the cage, wondering where she is. Poor guys misses his best girl! Hopefully, I won’t stress myself out too much worrying… I know that my vet is very experienced and she did a great job with Calypso. Echo will be fine.

My good little girl is home and doing great. Yay! She’s eating very little, but is pooping and peeing, so that is great! I feel so bad for the little one. She’s just sitting quietly in her teeny little cage. That’s a clear indication that she’s not feeling the best. Normally she’d be rattling the bars demanding to be let out. Anyway, I am very relieved that everything went so well and now am just hoping for a swift recovery.

Poor girl, give her lots of pets How logn do you have to keep her confined? My hubby is curious, as we’re getting Monkey fixed soon too.

They recommended 10 – 14 days, but I don’t know if she’ll tolerate it for that long. She’s already rattling the cage. But she’s being a VERY good girl and not chewing at her incision.

I’m glad everything went well! I was a bundle of nerves when we took Comet in too, since I didn’t have to go through that process with Chubs. He’s recovered though and doing great! I’m sure Echo will be all healed up and thumping in no time

Yeah, she’s back to normal, all right! And with more rabbitude than ever before! She is sooo mad at me. Mad and mistrustful. I had her out for a short time so that she could stretch her legs, and she avoided me like the plague. She wouldn’t even come over for a raisin! She knew that I was hatching an evil plot to check her incision. Smart bunny. I think it’s going to take some time to rebuild our bond. The same thing happened when Calypso’s foot was infected. He would be torn when I offered him a treat because he REALLY wanted it, but he knew that it was just bait. lol.

My poor baby. I wish there was a pain-free way to have bunnies fixed. It’s so hard to see them in pain, stressed out and mistrustful of my treat offers.

So, as I said, I’ve been keeping Echo in a tiny little cage in the living room to restrict her ability to hurt herself. Calypso has been free range, so that he can keep her company, which has been great. HOWEVER, this morning I woke up to find that Calypso had peed all around Echo’s cage! Fortunately, I have the cage on a tarp, so the floor was not covered in pee, just the tarp was. But… what the…?? I’m assuming that Calypso does not consider Echo to be his best girl anymore… he’s treating her like she’s a new bunny. Is their bond broken? Now I am afraid to let her out with him in case there is a scuffle and she gets hurt as a result of her surgery… I think I’m going to play things safe and just wait until she’s healed, then re-bond them.

Any insight, ideas, comments?

sounds like he’s reestalishing dominance. this happened when i got penny neutered- they kind of had to figure out who was boss now that penny’s hormones were gone. i would definitely wait until echo is healed, and then let them be together in a neutral place again and see how it goes
