As some of you know I adopted a new bunny who is bonded to one of my other bunnies, Marley, recently. I don’t remember if I told you guys that Freddy was seen at the vet on like the 5th or 6th of August. At that time the vet told us he had an upper respiratory infection. She sent us home with Baytil. I gave it to Freddy for the 10 days that the vet told me to twice a day and it cleared up and Freddy seemed happier and more energetic. Well here is is a couple weeks later and Freddy’s eye is so much worse and this happened in a matter of 3 or 4 days. He’s also lost some weight where I can now feel some of his bones (I could feel some of his bones when I got him but not like this). He weighed 4 lbs when he came to me but I am not sure how much he weighs now as the vet tonight forgot to tell us. He seemed very weak last night but seems to have gotten some strength today. He’s drinking A TON of water too. So I called MY vet and tried to get an appointment today but no luck and they weren’t treating it as an emergency situation for some reason and it kind of made me wonder about my vet. My mom and I tried searching online for local vets that saw rabbits or emergency vets that saw rabbits but seriously I am beginning to wonder about where I live. Why are there not more exotic vets? The only vet in MY vet. So I got in touch with the rescue I adopted Freddy from and she suggested I go to the vet that is in San Diego because that is where the rescue takes their rabbits. I live no where near San Diego. I live about 65-70 miles from Escondido (which is where the vet was at). Anyway, I called that vet and luckily they were seeing this as an emergency and we got an appointment for 7:45 pm tonight. We took Freddy and Marley (Marley was just tagging along to keep Freddy company) and the vet examined Freddy. He does have an eye infection but she is not sure what is causing it. She is suspecting dental disease because he also drools but she needs to do an x-ray to see what is going on in his mouth more. She is not sure why he would be losing weight but she wants to do blood work because it could be something to do with his organs such as kidney failure. I knew in my heart that when I adopted Freddy (well when I took him home) that there was something wrong and that is why I wanted to do blood work at MY vet but MY vet said to wait… -.- I didn’t want to turn Freddy away and not adopt him because 1, Marley got along with him very well and 2, I knew he needed love and care. If he is seriously ill it would be better for him to be with me and Marley than to be in the rescue all alone.
Anyway, it was a very long night. We came home with TONS of meds and will see about the blood work and x-rays soon.
We have eye drops to be given 3 times a day, oral antibiotics, antibiotic injection to be given every 48 hours, and Sub-q fluids. Oh and Critical care. I have never given an animal an injection (or a human) but they showed us how and I don’t think it should be too hard.
Anyway, I am so tired. I should get off here.
Please please please keep Freddy in your thoughts!!
