I was watching my rabbit clean his ears and as he tilted his head I noticed something under his chin. My bunny hates being picked up so to avoid upsetting him I often sit on the floor to cuddle or play. But after looking I noticed a strange growth under his chin. Its like the skin has ballooned out and there’s a bubble under his chin. It seems like its filled with liquid but he won’t let me touch it and in afraid I’ll hurt him. He’s still eating and drinking but I’m very concerned. Has anyone else seen something like this? Unfortunately due to personal reasons I’ve been forced sick leave from work and am currently awaiting EI. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to make sure he’s okay before I can take him to a vet? Thanks so much for reading.

This sounds like an abscess.  Some can be slow growing while others can be fast growing.  Abscesses can get very nasty very quick. Do you notice any smell — sometimes it has a rotten meat smell.   This is something you need to have a vet take care of.  It’s not an emergency, but it is urgent. Call a vet first thing in the morning. Do you have a rabbit-savvy vet?  Let them know your financial issue and ask if they can work out a payment plan with you.  If it is an abscess, they rarely go away on their own and they due need medical care as they can grow and attach to muscle and bone which makes things worse.  It could be a tooth root abscess that is now ballooning out.  I had a bunny that this happened to, but it takes take vet care.  I am so sorry as I know it’s not easy for you at the moment, so please see if there are some payment arrangements that can be made with the vet.

I don’t know what you can do unless he will let you warm compress it. But if it’s a growth of some sort, of course, that will just stress him out for no reason. Can you feel a scab or anything on it? Hopefully someone will have something more for you to try in the meantime.

            Oops…FL beat me to it

Thank you everyone. After googling (which I know isn’t always the best) it does look like an abscess. I’m pretty distraught. I’m searching for a respectable vet that knows rabbits and hopefully they’ll accept a payment option. I just don’t want him in pain
