Please Help!

Hi, so long story short i adopted 2 eight week old bunnies and was told that they were both female. They are from the same litter, so i wanted to adopt two to make sure one wouldn’t be too lonely. I had them for a week and monitored them closely. And i bonded with them every day. Today though when I let them both out for play time after they had their Kale and Lettuce I noticed that my brown bunny was starting to ride my white bunny’s face. I thought that, that was odd and thought they were just playing until I saw the brown bunny begin to go around the back side and try to ride the white bunny. I clapped to try to get it to stop,  and I was kind of at shock for a moment because my friend who had fostered a lot of bunnies told me that most bunnies don’t even know how to start “riding” until they were 20 weeks of age. And she also told me that bunnies can’t even get pregnant until they’re more sexually mature at around 20 or so weeks of age. I’ve been doing more and more research to find out that bunnies CAN actually become pregnant at 9 weeks of age but they run the risk of DYING while giving birth! I am so scared and I don’t know what to do. I just now encountered them even humping and I don’t know if it had been going on overnight while i was asleep or not. I have them separated for right now. I am frantically building a separate cage next to each other so they can still see each other, until my male is ready to be neutered.

 

Does anyone have any advice on how I know if my white bunny is pregnant? Not only that do males normally ride other males? Because I don’t even know if the white one is actually male or female. Also is any way to terminate the pregnancy for a bunny that is so young? I’ve researched that giving them a little parsley or lavender can terminate a pregnancy but I don’t know if it will hurt my bunny now that she is so young. I am so worried, I also called the vet today, and they told me that although female bunnies can be spayed at 4 months its best to wait until 6 months. I will keep them separated until my buck has reached the 4 month mark to be neutered.

please if anyone could help i would be so grateful… I am a first time bunny mother and I am so scared…I don’t want my bunny to die..

So both rabbits are 9 weeks old now?
I think the buck would be too young to produce viable sperm but separating them is a good idea regardless. When these hormonal behaviours start, they can also begin fighting and cause injury.

Best get a vet to identify their genders and put your mind at rest.

Mounting is not gender specific. In non desexed rabbits its certainly hormonal in nature. But even desexed rabbits will do this on occasion. Much of the time it is an act of dominance. Sometimes it’s excitement over food. Lol

My first advice to you is to get them sexed at a vet to properly determine sex. It is unlikely that a female will get pregnant at this age.

Also humping is not gender specific.

That lavender and parsley thing to terminate pregnancy – pretty much rubbish.

Oh man! I can understand your concern… To many of us with multiple buns, bunny humping is just something we’re used to, but it can be a shock if you’re not expecting it!

As Jersey and Sarita said, both boys and girls can hump. Two boys can hump each other, two girls can hump each other, and obviously opposite sex pairs will hump. They do this bc of hormones, or to show who is in charge (dominance), or just bc they are excited and/or want to play.

It sounds like you are assuming that the bun who humped is male, but that bunny could still be a female. The best thing at this point would be to get them both in to the vet for a “new bunny exam”. The vet will confirm their sexes, check them over to make sure they are both healthy, do a fecal test to check for parasites (you may have to request this), and discuss proper diet and care with you.

The vet you called is correct in that boys are usually able to be neutered at 4 months, and girls at 6 months. So he will also go over that info with you at the vet visit…
