Here’s some follow up for those who are interested.
Pip had a recheck of her blood results, her vet was back in town and wanted to see if her protein (albumin) was still low. Sadly he found that it was. He’s not prescribed any treatment, and wants to continue to monitor it, but he did say I should keep an eye out for any edema (swelling) on her anywhere. This could indicate liver or kidney problems. She is 8 years old and has recently had episodes of rolling/ear infection (now cleared up) and stasis (bad enough to require admission to the vet hospital) in the last few months.
I’m guessing we are beginning to see the possible last illnesses of her life. She is a good girl and deserves as much comfort as I can give her. It could also just be an effect of the metacam in her system, but I think other signs would’ve shown up in the tests if it were.
And Mimzy had to ride shotgun with us when we went in yesterday because one of my cats fell on him in a failed jump to the kitchen counter (thanks a lot, Griffy!) and took some fur off his left flank. He may have banged up his bad rear leg as well because Mimz has been a bit uncomfy in that end, moreso than usual, since Tuesday night when it happened. Of course he doesn’t show any sign of this in the vet office, so his doctor said he should be fine, but I’m supposed to roll his skin between my fingers each day to check for any developing abscesses and let him know if anything else changes. He did not prescribe antibiotics but will have an RX for baytril ready at the desk if I should need one over the weekend. They’re closed for the 4th, obviously, but open Friday and Sunday. If nothing shows up by next week, Mimzy has dodged another bullet. The vet also said his cataracts are getting worse, maybe the reason why he didn’t see the cat coming.
I took him in to be seen because I’d read that cat scratches can kill a bunny if it gets a certain germ in the cut, so I thought I’d rather be safe than sorry. My family thinks I overdo it with them, but we live so far from town, it doesn’t pay to wait till the last minute.
These bunnies sure keep me on my toes (eyeroll) so much so that I should take up ballet!
