I have read that if you air out pine shavings for at least a month – and you can no longer smell the “piney smell”  – they are then safe to use in the litter box – is this true?   . . . also – what studies have been done regarding pine shavings and rabbit health? Thanks.

I’m not sure that any amount of airing out would completely eliminate the odour. So, therefore I would steer clear.

Not sure about specific studies but this is what The House Rabbit Society (who keep their info pretty up to date) has to say about pine:

I was talking to Panda and Fernando’s foster mom this morning about setting up a digging box similar to what BunNoob has for Ophelia, and when I mentioned that I was thinking about aspen shavings, she said “no, don’t use those, they’re poisonous”. I was mildly surprised since I’d understood previously that aspen shavings were safe in comparison to pine and cedar, but it’s a fairly moot issue anyway since I think I’ll be using stove wood pellets, which are to be had quite cheaply.
