During the last couple of weeks, I’ve been searching my city’s Kijiji classified ads for Easter Bunny-type ads: wanted or for sale so I can e-mail them. There has only been one and I responded to it. So today I decided to do a search on New Brunswick Kijiji and see the whole province’s ads. There were quite a few. I have some e-mails to write.
I was sort of surprised by this ad:
I’m not sure what to make of it. Obviously, I think it’s good that these people are not BUYING a bunny for their 4.5 year olds. But seriously, do kids really need a REAL Easter Bunny at Easter? Is everyone that jaded? When I was a kid I got a little plush bunny and some chocolates and I was happy as pie! I used my imagination about the Easter Bunny. Do kids still do that? ![]()
Geesh. How dumb. Besides, $10 is NOT enough for me to haul my bunny to some stranger’s house with all her stuff. lol Maybe it’s because it wasn’t perpetuate in my family (being religious and all) but I pretty much figured out very young that the easter bunny was not real. I’m sure her 4 year olds already know. lol
I’ve seen listings before by breeders (and other people) offering to “rent out” bunnies hourly for easter photo sessions. Weird isn’t it? Unless I knew the people very well, there would be no amount of money you could pay me to let somebody take my bunny!
Urgh…. *suspicious* I don’t know…YOU come get MY rabbit WITHOUT ME for a tenner and expect me to believe you’ll just bring him back, especially after being with two little girls for an afternoon?? Er… no. Inventive, but hardly credible.
Some people…I just don’t understand what passes for the term ‘humanity’ these days… I mean, who would be interested in doing something like this?
Oh wait… I just remembered the beginning of Air Bud…where the bad guy dresses up as a clown and takes the dog to kids’ birthday parties for money? Maybe someone like that…. *shakes head*
I don’t know. I guess I could see someone who owns a rabbit having, say, a photo booth where people can come and have their kids meet a “real” Easter bunny. Of course this would have to be a very unusual bunny that doesn’t mind being petted and whatnot by little kids. Obviously this person would have complete control over the situation, only letting the kids pet the rabbit nicely and offer it a treat. It would at least be a responsible alternative for parents wishing to make Easter special for their kids, letting them see and pet a real rabbit but not actually getting one as a pet. But I couldn’t imagine “renting” out a rabbit to go to someone’s home where you have no control over the situation and there are kids there what could do who knows what to the rabbit. I mean, kids will be kids and sometimes they don’t understand that they could potentially hurt an animal.
Porky is an extremely easy going bunny who loves kids. It’s why we adopted him. We had met other bunnies at different shelters before we found Porky, but they did not seem like they would be happy with DS. One bunny we met literally flinched when DS simply said “hi bunny” to her. Porky though is so relaxed, I could totally see him being fine with meeting a bunch of little kids. Porky gets on great with my 5 yo after all.
There are certainly people who rent out bunnies. One came to a fair at my DS’ preschool with a bunch of bunnies. This guy stood next to the bunnies the whole time and was not shy about enforcing gentleness even when parents didn’t. The local zoo has an eduction bunny, that they take to schools and stuff (he’s been extra busy this year b/c it’s the year of the rabbit, so he’s was doing Lunar/Chinese New Year stuff this winter.)
I could see doing something like that, where you take your bunny to a persons home and let them play for a little while, but it would have to be supervised. I’ve spent too much time seeing what some parents call “supervision” to trust that it would meet my expectations. Of course, $10 barely covers the gas if it’s a few miles, never mind both my time and the bunnies time. I would think most bunny rentals to charge at least $40 for couple of hour visit. I could totally see offering come meet the easter bunny and get a photo, that could be much more profitable, and easier to supervise.
It really would hinge on the bunny(ies) having the right personality for the job though. Only a few bunnies are that relaxed and outgoing.
I think it was poignant of someone to post that people don’t get their kids reindeer for Christmas so why chicks and bunnies for easter. Beyond bizarre….
I dont think I could let my baby go off to some strangers house without me. She is my little girl! I love her too much to risk something happening, even for that whopping $10 (sarcasm)
I guess I give him props for not buying a rabbit but geez…I’m with Puffy Tail, what happened to imagination? lol I’d never let someone I didn’t know take one of my guys for entertainment of 2 little ones without MY supervision. Then again…my guys would hate every second of that. Haha.
It’s just an accident waiting to happen. Bindi is calm and doesn’t mind little kids and snuggling but you pick him up and if he decides he wants to get out of your arms, he’s not opposed to trying to jump into thin air. I am very leery about anyone but me picking him up, even my bf. Chances are you’d go pick up your bunny and he’d have a broken leg. Imagine the battle over the vet bill? Plus with little kids, you never know, they might feed him chocolate or something. I really hope no one goes for this.
Teehee – reindeer for christmas. I’m going to have to remember that for winter. I hear they’re like dogs and follow you around. Maybe that would work in my small city house.
But really – bad idea. And there are many more of those ads out there. I think i saw two or three on my local cl.
And looking at this the other way: how is this person going to bring any pet in the house with 4 year old children for a couple hours, and then say, “Ok… that’s it.” Those children will freak out when it’s time for the bunny to leave. That will end up being more heart-breaking for them than anything else.
Yeah Really, Beka Good point.
Oooo I want a reindeer pet! Thanks for the great idea!! (jk!)
10$ to rent my bumbas? NO THANKS!
Wonder if she got any responses….
And to think they used to dye chicks and ducklings with food coloring so they would be blue or pink balls of fluff for the kids on Easter morning…
Eh, and knowing the bunny, the bunny will freak out due to a new environment!
if it were Monkey, I’d be more worried about the mom getting her kids back in one piece. My Monkey is a feisty one when messed with ![]()
And Chacha would rip the humans to shreds. Including myself.
Urggh. This reminds me of this past week. My sister-in-law actually asked if I would bring my two bunnies over to my mother-in-law’s house so that they could get pictures of my nieces with my buns for Easter. I was like ”Yeah… if you want my rabbits to have PTSD and your kids to have a visit to the ER.”
I mean our bunnies are super affectionate and great with us. But having them in a new environment with kids squeezing them to death and chasing them? Yeah I am not putting my buns through that.. No way.
