*Phew! Health scare and big thank you to BB!

This morning Thor was acting sick again. She was excited about her morning pellets but only ate a few before going to sit in an unusual spot, looking uncomfortable and pressing her belly to the ground. I tried to entice her with treats but she refused everything. After about an hour she started to display even more worrying signs, flopping next to her water dish and even dipping her whole face into her water bowl  She was also breathing quickly and was somewhat lethargic and zoncked out. 

Thanks to all the great advice I’ve read on here before, I actually knew what to do. I dosed her with 1ml of unflavored infant gas drops once an hour for three hours. Thanks to Wick for giving me the correct technique for holding an unwilling bun to give medicine! After the second dose she started to perk up and eat some hay, went into her box for a poop. Tonight now she’s noming a salad and being extra affectionate I really think acting quickly helped her to recover quickly without this becoming a big incident. Still keeping a close watch for any other symptoms.

You did a great job identifying worrying behaviors and taking action quickly. The large majority of credit definitely goes to you and your attentiveness/ willingness to get right into treatment! I’m glad my technique helped make your baby feel better.

Yes I was thinking originally it was inconvenient for her to get sick on a Sunday (only emergency vet is available today), but in the end I think it was lucky I was home to watch her and notice she was feeling ill.

Of course I would take her to the vet immediately if she needed it. But in this case I’m glad I was able to get her feeling better without having to stress her out with a car trip. Thor hates the car.

ETA: I’ll also add that I’m fairly sure it’s a large oncoming molt that has contributed to this. The only other time she acted poorly like this was at a similar molt time. I’ll be sure to work extra hard to get excess fur off her. Getting a new lint roller tomorrow…

I gave Potamus a dose of simethicone last night also. When she hopped out for her pellets, she arched her back downward (does that make sense?lol) So like a bit of a belly press I suppose. She may have just been stretching. But later on she let me massage her tummy and there was a spot she tensed up then relaxed afterward. It was enough for me to think perhaps a dose of Infacol wouldn’t hurt. She seems good today.

She’s also moulting a bit. When are they not?!

Goodness me, that sounds scary especially the part about her dipping her face in her bowl and being a bit out of it. Can tummy issues really cause that? I had no idea. Thank god shes okay now!

Yes it was really quite alarming! 

The reason I do think it was just tummy issues is that she had the exact same behavior about a year ago when she was treated for stasis. At the time I didn’t have any Infacol at home, as a nervous new bun owner I took her to the vet right away. She was then diagnosed with stasis and we syringe fed her for about 2 days while she slowly regained her appetite. I wonder now if that could have been avoided with some simple gas drops… but I suppose it’s silly to conjecture. I’m glad we took her in when we did
