I was on the craiglist pet listing for a while when there was this lady who needed help with her rabbit. She has two unspayed females. The younger one (4 months) seems hormonal because she is biting and mounting the other rabbit. I tried to tell her that she should spay them both and separate them until they are. She put another posting up for help because the younger and when I replied to this one she said that someone told her to breed her rabbit and she’ll stop biting and attacking when she puts her hand in the cage. I replied again to urge her not to breed her rabbit. Is there any way I can convince her not to with some facts?

Perhaps you can find out from the ASPCA how many rabbits are abandoned annually at shelters and express how irresponsible it is to breed her rabbit simply to make the rabbit more friendly. Also, if she breeds it, she will then be landed with a litter of rabbits that may be unfriendly, plus the mother (Im not sure about this) may even become more protective of her territory.
Discuss with her that rabbits are afraid of big animals eating them and that when she enters the rabbits cage, she is reaching into the rabbit’s den and trying to attack the rabbit, that is at least how the rabbit probably sees it.
I have also read in multiple places that rabbits live longer and are healthier if they are spayed. Check either the information provided on this site or the House Rabbit Society’s site.
I have been told that introducing male and female rabbits to breed can be very dangerous for them both. I am not sure about this information but I was told by a friend that the female would attack and try to kill the male if the male is introduced into her territory… obviously this doesn’t always happen but I dont know. Like I said, I am not sure of this information, it is all just stuff I have been told. I don’t plan on breeding mine and I spayed her. She was very irritable before I spayed her and is now a little cuddle bun. Behavior, in mine opinion, improves greatly after spaying.

          Good luck!!!!!
Good luck with her. I hope you can really

Thank you. I think I forgot to mention health benefits of spaying. I will add that the next time.

I’m lost…two spayed females-how could she spay them and how could she breed them?? Am I misreading? (That happens! )

As far as I can tell, Casey’s (livingonfaith) information is correct. I’m also confused too on exactly whether or not the “females” are spayed…?

Even if they are fixed, some bunnies are naturally more aggressive/territorial than others, though this will usually subside a bit with age. Breeding definitely will not help!! Thanks for helping this woman with her rabbits!

Ah, sorry. I meant two unspayed females. Sorry, I was a bit sleepy when typing this out. I will edit that.

Ahhh ok…so if they are both females though-this owner is wanting to breed them with other rabbits?
Could this be a craigslist troll maybe?

Ooo, that really changes things then. Unfixed buns are very territorial and impossible to bond after they reach sexual maturity. First step for her would be to get them spayed!  Also, like you were saying, it’s very beneficial to health to have them spayed – tell her that females have a crazy high chance of getting cancer at an early age if they are not fixed.

I’m not sure if she’s a troll. I wouldn’t know what to look for to identify a troll. This was her first post: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/pet/2300105500.html

                        Her second one: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/pet/2301309893.html

When I told her that she should consider spaying, she responded by saying, “I’ve been told I have to breed her to make it stop. I can’t even get her out of the cage without being bit”. I emailed her back urging her not to breed, trying to tell her that her rabbit’s offspring may end up dying in a shelter somewhere. She never replied back, so I doubt she’ll listen.

Huh-seems involved to be a troll. Well I’d try emailing her but really it’s out of your hands so don’t stress too hard!!! Maybe tell her to see a vet and get real advice-she obviously wants to listen to some (Breed them) and not others (don’t) -crummy…

I’ve been sending emails to her with no reply back. Agh. The first email I sent, I tried to refer her here but I don’t think she’s signed up or anything. I really hope she doesn’t go through with breeding her.
