Okay okay I was going to wait until classes ended for the day so I could go back home and take nice glamour shots for a proper introduction…but I’m too excited about my new little bunny guy and have a short break in classes at the moment, so I’ll just make a text post now and add pictures later!

Milo is a gorgeous completely black uppy-eared bunny about 5.5 lbs (juuust a tad bigger than Peppy), but I have absolutely no idea what breed he is.  The pairing process began last Sunday, and they’ve been together 24/7 since Thursday, sharing everything with no fights at all!  Peppy, as per her usual super affectionate self, took to grooming him already on the first date, and I’m glad to have caught him sneaking a few licks in too!

We finally took the two of them home last night; I was worried that their relationship might change once we took them back to Peppy’s territory, but it’s actually been great.  No fighting or nastiness at all, and they’ve both groomed each other a little bit while lounging in the cage.  Milo even immediately figured out where the litterbox was and promptly used it, with not a single accident beforehand! Peppy plopped down in her usual relaxing places, but I think Milo is still trying to figure out the comfortable spots, lol. While I’m sure their relationship is still developing, I’m excited and things look quite promising; I’m still keeping an eye on them in case anything flares up unexpectedly, but they look completely nonchalant about the whole thing.

One thing about Milo – he’s also an incisor-less bunny!  The shelter people told us that when he was picked up about a year ago, his incisors were so maloccluded that they were growing out of his mouth.  His lack of incisors still doesn’t stop him from trying to use them, though…poor little guy was trying to steal parsley from Peppy last night, but it didn’t go so well for him, lol.  Apparently his peg teeth are still intact though, and will need periodic trimming or maybe eventual removal (which they did NOT tell us until we were finalizing the adoption papers ).

I guess that’s it for now, I’ll post some pictures when I get the chance!

Oh, no fair! You can’t announce this and not have pictures yet!

Heheh, congrats peppypoo. It’s great to hear things went smoother this time round. Sound like a quick bond!

Ahhhh, black bunnies are near impossible to photograph!  Not to mention that Milo is practically invisible sometimes, too.  Well I tried my best, and these are no glamour shots but they’re the best I could do without getting him too mad .

            Black bunny loaf!

He’s got the slightest cream-colored spots on hips nose/lips

            Checking out my computer.

            More exploring

I love the way his eye color contrasts with his fur!

            Bonus: a bunny butt!

I wouldn’t worry about the picture quality, these are great! He’s lovely! He’s head and body shape is actually much like Peppy’s – do you think? I wonder if he has some Dutch in him?

I may seem weird but I think the incisorless buns are extra cute with their wubby wips!

Brittany – lol oh dear, I’m going to start looking like a bunny hoarder as my sig gets bigger and bigger!

LPT – Well, Peppy groomed almost every single one of the boy bunnies she met…I guess she’s just a very lovin’ type of girl, if you know what I mean

jerseygirl – Yea, I think Milo looks like a slightly enlarged version of Peppy, but dyed black. The shelter people said he might be New Zealand, but I thought they were a slightly bigger breed; they also ventured a guess at Polish, but I wouldn’t rule out a bit of Dutch as well. All I know is that he’s a very handsome medium-sized bun!

grumpybun – Mr. Milo would like to say hello to you too! He’s still getting to know his new home, but he’s settling in quite well and has even done a few binkies

I’ve been working with Milo a lot, getting him used to us and hand-feeding plenty of yummies to socialize him…he’s not an unfriendly or nervous bun, but (understandably) not quite as genial as Peppy yet. Meanwhile, Peppy seems to be a bit irked that she has to do tricks for her treats, but her new bunny buddy gets treats just for being friendly! Silly girl

I think the whole Miss Binky Bunny thing went to her head. She thinks she’s God’s gift to bucks now!

                                              One week later….

So Milo has been home for about a week, and things are going great. In the beginning he was kind of wary, and spent the majority of the time in the carrier in the bunny condo – the only place where us silly humans can’t bother them. Perfectly understandable…he was getting used to the new place and scouting us out. The past few days though, he’s been spending more and more time lounging out in the room, and has opened up a lot to touches and pets, even begging for them! I’ve tried getting him to give me kisses by nudging his chin with my hand, but he would just nudge me back and demand that I keep giving him pets, lol. He and Peppy groom each other all the time though, so hopefully he’ll warm up to us even more in the future as well.

Litter habits have deteriorated slightly..I’d say he’s at about 80% with those. It’s all poos though, which is easy enough to clean up. Thing is, he ALWAYS has to poo when he’s eating hay; I know bunnies like to poo and eat at the same time, but it’s an automatic thing for him: hay –> poo. The way the hay box is arranged, one side of it faces the litter box so that the bunnies can access it during restroom time. About half the time, he manages to park himself in the litter box while eating so it’s all okay. However, if he accesses the hay box from any of the other sides, he just leaves little piles of poos whenever he’s standing. Silly bunny boy…we’re still working on it and brainstorming ways to clean things up!

I’m glad things are going well! Sounds like he’s adjusting just fine!

Lolli automatically peed and pooped whenever she ate hay (and still does). Then dingbat Eddie started doing it too even though he never did before. (banged head on wall) I resisted putting the hay in the litter box for a while cause it just seemed gross. But I got over that. You might have to do the same thing – have the hay only assessable in the litter box. Or…..just pick up the poops more.

Its natural for bunnies to eat hay and go at the same time

MB – as I mentioned, I know its natural; that’s why the hay box is easily accessible from the litter box in my setup. However, Peppy seemed to know that “if I’m eating hay from the litter box, I can poo…but if I’m eating hay but I’m not standing in the litter box, then I won’t poo”. On the other hand, it’s a lot more of an automatic process for Milo, lol.

Michelle – We don’t buy hay in large quantities, so I’m kind of resisting putting it in the litter box because that would greatly increase the amount of wasted/soiled hay (my bunnies like to dig in the box). We’re thinking of putting the hay box behind the litter box though, so they would have to be standing in the litter box to eat it. Maybe that will work!

I went home for lunch break and found that my boyfriend had moved the hay box behind the litter box, so the buns HAVE to be sitting in the litter box to access the hay. Problem solved! (for now)

Forgot to mention last night – Milo is such a smart bunny! I never did a very structured stimulus-response conditioning (like I did with Peppy) to train him to come when I call, but he’s picked it up already! He’s also well on his way to learning “up!” and he’s hardly been home for a week. Now, when I give the signal, two buns come bounding across the room to me…it’s the cutest thing ever
