So I post on the craigslist pet section every once in awhile to advertise adopting rabbits from rescues. I looked today and these people replied to my ad..
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/s…srchType=A
(The ones with the “re:Adopt rabbbits from rescues”. Underneath them you can see my ad)
What should I do? Reply? :/ Or ignore it..?
omg they are so rude. I can’t see what you posted but Im sure it didnt deserve that post back to you. I don’t know sometimes its better to ignore those kind of people but sometimes you just want to tell them to calm down and get a life!!
Here is what I wrote..
It always amazes me how people can sell there bunnies on here for $30+ when they are not spayed or neutered!!
Pet store rabbit: $60
Spay/neuter for rabbit: $200-$300
ADOPTING an already spayed/neutered rabbit: $50-$60!!!
Female rabbits have an 85% chance of getting cancer by the age of 2 if they are not spayed.
Please go to your local rescue to see their happy bunnies.
Also check out this article on how much a bunny REALLY costs!! https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/CostofHavingaBunny/tabid/145/Default.aspx
Rabbits cost around $80 MONTHLY to care for.
If you reply, you are really just going to start an ignorance fight. Honestly, it’s best to just ignore craigslist tbh. That last post says they ONLY feed their rabbit carrots as veggies, great.. a treat veggie as their only veg. Those people OBVIOUSLY don’t know anything about bunny care, nor will they listen. So reply if you want, but I wouldn’t expect anything but some more fighting / arguments if you do.
Totally agree with you Stickerbunny! I just wanted to hear other peoples opinions! It is rather unfortunate for their buns ![]()
Unfortunately there’s lots of people like that out there. “The risk of cancer is only in unspayed and unbred rabbits” heh…so the solution to cancer is more bunnies in shelters? Sorry I just had to get out that little rant. Often people can be very misinformed and get defensive, nothing we can do about it ):
I can’t see the ad but I can say this about people who post replies in poor taste or that are rude, they are just trying to pick a fight so just ignore them. It’s easy for people to antagonize and post anon on the internet. Just ignore them and realize that is what they are doing.
Agreed. ^^^
I agree with some of the points they made though. It is like $120 (can’t remember exactly) for spay/neuter here. So depending on where they live (since this says “everywhere” for location), $200-$300 might sound completely outrageous to them. Plus I don’t think I spend $80 a month of food. The buns are picky with their veggies and only want that organic baby greens mix that comes in the big plastic box (I’ve tried just buying regular veggies and they turn their noses up at it). I get those for $4 and they last several days. I get their food and hay at a store where they have punch cards for Oxbow too.
I easily spend $20 a week on veggies for my buns, so $80 a month is definitely doable by me lol. And that isn’t including treats or their pellets.
I buy 2 heads of lettuce a week, 2 bunches of cilantro.. the biggest expense for me is hay. I have a picky bunny. My dad freaked out on HOW MUCH I spend on hay, but it is definitely worth it.
I have no complaints about what I have to pay.
I’m not saying you can’t easily spend $80 a month. LOL I’m just saying that some of the numbers might sound outrageous depending on where you live. Those people were pretty rude about it though. I think if they wanted to disagree, they could have been a little more respectful about it.
I agree with you LB.
ETA- and while I support adopting from rescues, I hate the judgy feel that BB has occasionally towards buying from a breeder or petstore. I did both, and I wont feel bad for it. To me its all about providing the best life for our rabbits, no matter how we got them.
I think maybe there are just some areas that have tons of rabbits in shelters, so it seems more logical to look in those places first. LOL When we were looking for Leopold, they didn’t have any bunnies at the humane society. We don’t have a rabbit rescue here. So yes, Leopold came from a feed store. My husband saw him there and just couldn’t resist.

Here is what I wrote..It always amazes me how people can sell there bunnies on here for $30+ when they are not spayed or neutered!!
Craigslist is like driving. People feel more brave to give each other the finger and yell at each other though the safety of their car…or in this case behind their computer. Craigslist can really get just nasty. So if you start a craigslist post that is critical and ends with exclamation points, you can unintentionally set yourself up for tension. (I’m surprised I haven’t received any nasty emails since in the craigslist post you linked to BB cost page)
I know your intention was to educate so that people are fully informed when they decide to get a bunny. But in order to prevent backlash, it would be better to just offer information to the people that will be looking for a bunny. And appeal to the positive side. Like..Thinking of getting a bunny? Learn all you can as cost and time needs may surprise you, plus there are wonderful bunnies that are already spayed and neutered up for adoption looking for forever homes. The fact they are already spayed and neutered will save you money too!
Anyway, that is just a quicky example. That way you don’t specify actual number to dispute. You just offer interest and they can do what they want with it. And then just ignore the ones that get heated about it. When someone gets that upset about it, they are not normally in a place to listen anyway. And anyone can bring up any link to support any idea to prove their side. Some people will just not believe you should give greens to your bunny or spend a particular amount, regardless. You may have helped a bunch that you never knew about, and so don’t worry about the few that are more vocal or rude (If they get extremely rude, you can flag their post)
From Sam & Lady’s Human: “and while I support adopting from rescues, I hate the judgy feel that BB has occasionally towards buying from a breeder or petstore. I did both, and I wont feel bad for it. To me its all about providing the best life for our rabbits, no matter how we got them
I do understand that we can definitely strongly encourage adoption and that can come off “judgy”. Especially those of us that volunteered or have worked in shelters, it’s easy to become passionate or jaded over time after seeing what happens to the rabbits and how many are needing a second chance. And I will try to be aware of that type of “judgy” tone. I do not want our site to make people feel bad about where they got their bunny. I got my first bunny from a breeder, and that breeder was the one that actually told me about HRS as a reference.
This is also what I say about it in the FAQ section: “People who take an animal into their home are ultimately responsible for their animal’s welfare no matter where the pet originally came from. And hopefully this site can some how help rabbit owners through their trials and tribulations so that they will not put their bunny at risk by giving it up.”
So the focus here should always be on helping people take the best care possible, and if someone is wondering about where to get their bunny, there are many of us (me included) that will recommend adoption just because of the overwhelming need there is, but regardless of where a person decides to get their bunny, I don’t want them to feel judged, (that is sad to hear) As the focus is on the bunny….and how lucky s/he is to have a human that cares enough to come here and get some advice and share.
Thank you very much BB and others! I will take all of the advice you have given me!
I also have a post that I copied from here about easter rabbits that is more informative so I’m trying to help too! ![]()
Also, I’m not sure where the $80 a month on just veggies or food came from. I think on the cost page it is something like $40 for greens (though I spend more). On top of that was hay, pellets, litter, cleaner, etc. (And within that cost page there are little money saving tips too to get some things cheaper). It just goes to show you how easily things can get misconstrued in this type of format and get even worse when things get heated. So thats another reason to stick with generalities when you are posting in that kind of social arena and just be careful not to bring a mass of angry villagers and trollers here unintentionally.
Thanks BB for the reply, I love it here, it’s really unique from any other forum. If the worst part is a few people passionate about saving abandoned rabbits, then gosh I think we’re doing ok ![]()
it all depends on where you live, the lowest cost with in 60 miles of me is 300 with no rabbit savvy vets to choose from.
I clearly said around(!!) $80 a month to care for not just veggies so I don’t know where it came from either! I can delete this post no problem if you think it could bring some angry people here!
@Lazee, I have it kind of the same! I got the cheapest rabbit savvy vet I could find and it was like a 45 min drive!

Heehee I agree
And honestly, from a pet store or breeder you could be potentionally saving them from going to a home where they would have been neglected, abused, ect.

Oh no don’t worry. I should have been more clear. I was meaning in general for people who would post helpful tips on Craigslist (or like sites) and refer our site. I’ve noticed that some people reading it take it as if the person posting the site happens to also be the owner of the site. (They just assume), and so you don’t want to get into a heated argument with a band of crazy angry villagers and then offer up a link to the site for them come marching over with their pitchforks.
A couple of rude responses on craigslist were all that came of your post and you didn’t respond back so usually that ends up just fine. Plus, I can handle a few people with angry diverging opinions to my own. I’m just sure I would hate it if I had to deal with a larger mass all at the same time. That would be tiring, or if we had to deal with it in the forum. But again, your post did not generate that, so don’t worry — no need to delete, but that was kind of you of you to offer. Like I said, you may have helped more people than you know. ![]()
Glad to hear your thoughts BB!
