Pencillin shots

Hello i am new here and i dont know what has happened we took our dwarf rabbit to the vet 4 days algo for a eye infección gave us pencillin shots for the next 10 days and 3 days later she died on us. I am at a loss i am so sad she was so sweet. I followed the vets orders correctly and she was eating and drinking. She has been on antibotics before but the vet at the time gave her probotics with the antibotics and she was fine but this vet only gave her pencillin and no probotic and then she died has anyone heard of this happening before just trying to figure out what happened i am so upset.

Bunnies are great at hiding illness, and sometimes despite our best efforts, we just can’t always see what’s truly going on. You did absolutely everything you could to help her, but unfortunately sometimes these things do happen. Try not to blame yourself. Sending all my love and hugs to you.
I don’t think it’s likely it was because of lack of probiotics. All bunnies can react differently to medication, but without further detail I think it’s most likely something else was wrong.

I agree with LEL. The probiotics help prevent diarrhea in a bun that’s on antibiotics. So unless your bun got bad diarrhea, the lack of probiotics would not have been the issue. With penicillin G, stomach upset is not a very common common side effect, so that’s probably why you weren’t given probiotics.

The eye infection could have been the only symptom of something worse. It’s often like that with rabbits, as LEL says, they’re experts at hiding illness. They never ask for our help like dogs do, because showing signs of weakness is lethal in nature if you’re a rabbit, and our rabbits are still very much like their wild ancestors.

Thank you and yeah i hace been sitting forthe last 24 hours just wondering if i did something wrong she was 4 years old dwarf her name was oreo. Maybe she has a bad reaction to the pencillin cause the last medicine she was on was amoxcillin. I will post pictures as soon as i get them from My daughter oreo was her rabbit but we all came to love her Even thought she was aggressive but she wasnt spayed and that was What the doctor and i was going to do next after she was healthy enough was going to have her fixed and that was 5 days ago. I just cant believe how quick she went from being fine til the night she died. But thank you and i do realize rabbits are very sensitve animals and that anything can happen at a very fast rate with them. I have been reading on them lately. This was our first rabbit Even for me and i never knew how much joy a little animal can being you til now.

Thank you for your reply it helps me to know we did everything right for her she was our first rabbit and just seeing how quick things can change with them is scary we have another rabbit he a calfornian rabbit he still really young so i been doing alot more reading on rabbits so i am better prepared for anything. She was so special to us it its going to take awhile for us to get over losing her.
