I am not sure about getting rotten, but once the factory sealed bag is opened, you have a limited amount of time before the pellets will lose much of their nutrition to the atmosphere.  I think you have something like 2 months?

I try to only buy a month’s worth at a time for just that reason and store them in a sealed container.

Old/expired pellets may lose their nutritional value over time, so it’s best not to buy a huge amount at one time. Store pellets in a cool, dry place to keep them fresh.

You should never freeze pellets to prolong shelf life because the introduction of moisture during the thawing process and fluctuating temperatures may be conducive to mold growth.

Pellet bags are also stamped with an expiry date by the manufacturer. They say to not feed the pellets after that date.
