I have the Peeled Willow Hay Basket from BInkyBunny.  My bunnies love eating hay out of it and it’s less mess than the other hay racks.  BUT, my bunnies love it so much that they actually go IN the basket.  The problem is that they poop and pee in the basket.  So now I need to wash the basket regularly to keep it clean.

I’m thinking maybe I can just put it in a dishwasher or wash it with soapy water myself.  Because it’s made out of wood material, is it going to soak up water?  Am I gonna have to let it sit and dry for a day or so?

Oh, Bummer! Because it is wood, it would soak up the soap. So just water should be used and then it should dry just fine but watch for mold growth at the bottom if it doesn’t get air.

You could also try putting a little piece of plastic on the bottom to protect. Do they pee in it everyday? You must have adorable smaller bunnies. Jack and Rucy could not fit in that basket very well, but I know some smaller bunnies could find that to be the perfect snuggle, eat and pee place.

Maybe there is a way you can position it that would encourage only EATING from it. How is it placed right now?

I have three lionheads. The smallest one weighs only 3 ibs!!

I have it attached to the side of the cage AWAY from the litterbox. I always put some hay in the litterbox otherwise they poop all over the cage. I don’t want to risk them eating the plastic. Maybe I can use vinegar?? Or baking soda??

You could try vinegar and then rinse. The only thing I was thinking is it could leave it smelling like vinegar which could discourage them from eating hay out of it. I wouldn’t use baking soda because since it’s so loose and powdery, it could easily have residue left over. You might have to switch to metal hay racks.
