I’ve even working on litter box training Oreo the last few weeks and it was going really good. She loves her litter box and knows what it is for. However, lately the last few days Oreo has made a nasty habit of peeing and pooping outside of her litter box and all over the floor of her cage. I always clean it up as soon as I see it and put it into her litter box but it doesn’t seem to help.
With all this pee on the floor of her cage, Oreos rear, back legs and back paws are covered in pee. It’s orangey and yellow and her fur is matting. My room kinda smells but I’m not sure if she does exactly. I just know that I hate seeing her like this. I feel like an awful bunny mom because her backside looks so gross.
Oreo doesn’t seem too bothered by it and she does clean herself off and on through the day but it doesn’t really help.
Is there anything I can do to both help her go in her litter box again and clean her up?
I have tried wetting a washcloth with lukewarm water and wiping her down but it didn’t do too much.
Oh and she has pine wood shavings in her litter box cuz it’s so cheap.
But after my trip this weekend, I hope to go grab some of this stuff I found at tractor supply nearby.
Btw, it is called Cozy’ N Fresh™ Natural Pine Pellets.
It should be safe right?
I also found this horse stall pine pellet stuff as well on their website, both of these are at mine.
Would either work?
Could be the litter you used to use she didn’t like. The pine pellets are fine. I use feline pine from the pet stores. Looks like their food pellets just different color and it is safe to use.
Maybe she will like this new litter better. Also try putting carefresh bedding in her cage. She can pee on that and it will absorb and not get on her. Cotton does the same thing by his food dish.
I think they do it cuz when we feed them we are sticking our hands in their cage their personal territory and they are marking. I was never able to break Cotton of this so I just put bedding down and pick it up from that corner when it is wet. And replace it til Saturday comes and I clean his cage. He still uses his litterbox in his cage. HE just also pees and poos by his food dish when he eats there. Weird.
This is the only thing I can figure. Cuz we are sticking our hands in their cage to feed and water them. Cotton started this a year ago. He is 7 years now.
If you want to put the bedding you dont’ have to put a lot just put a bit where she pees. The feline pine would be too hard to sleep on and too hard to pick up from the cage everyday is why I say use carefresh. Easier to pick up by hand and to sleep on.
Or you can continue to try and get her to use litterbox by putting it in litterbox. The carefresh will stop the urine stains. And the smell. Is she spayed? That could be part of the problem too. She needs to be spayed. If she already is could be putting hands in her cage. That can’t be helped how else are you supposed to feed her lol. Telekenisis lol
She is spayed. She has been since Feb.
Thanks for your input! I’m gonna experiment as soon as I can.
Any tips on how to clean her fur though?
I would switch to the pine pellets, as the shavings can be harmful.
You can rub some cornstarch into the area and comb it out, and and this will absorb odour and moisture. If you feel like you need to bathe her, call your vet for advice. ![]()
I really like Yesterday’s News Original. I thought personally it worked better then the pine. Everyone likes something difference tho
Moccasin, does that sound like the problem your bunny had with the bladder infection? I don’t want to panic Missy, but it was reminiscent to me of the posting you had right before she was diagnosed w/ a UTI
This does sound like it could be a UTI. I recommend you rule that out first.
The pine pellet litter works great, doesn’t pose the same risk as the shavings, and is also very cheap. Using the shavings isn’t very dangerous in the short term, but for long term use it is good that you’re planning switch as the harmful effects are cumulative.
Megabunny, you remember me!
yes, it totally sounds like the problem I was having and after she got better from her UTI she was ALL better! it was like night and day!
I’m old, Moccasin and can barely remember what day it is sometimes. But I did remember that, surprisingly. Hope we get a follow up Missy
Thanks everyone for your input!
I just got back from my trip and seems like Oreo is still having troubles ):
I feared something like a UTI could be wrong, but wasn’t sure.
I am gonna make an appointment with my vet ASAP and get that new litter hopefully today.
I am gonna try cleaning her up some with the cornstarch though. Thanks for that idea LongEaredLions!
Good luck at the vet! ![]()
Just giving a update on Oreo;
Took her to the vet today and found out it was UTI related. They had to shave fur off of her rear and legs because it was so awfully matted. Turns out that her skin on her rear and legs is really irritated and she has a rash because of all the urine ):
But they cleaned her up back there, put cream on it to help, and gave her a shot. The shot is gonna last 3 weeks and supposed to take care of all UTI stuff in her body. They also gave me two tubes of ointment to put on her raw and rashy skin twice a day.
Oreo is doing some better so far so hopefully it’s all uphill from here!
Glad to hear! I just want you to know, there isn’t anything you can do to get the stains out of the fur, you just have to keep her in a clean environment and wait for the fur to grow out.
Glad you’re on track with her! A shot that lasts 3 weeks ? Wow!
They gave her a shot? I begged my vet for that, he said they didn’t have that… I had to give by mouth with a feeder 2 times a day… my bun hated me for like 2 weeks after that. Good they came out with a shot… its about time!! ![]()
